How does split sleeper work? Do I have to take short break first?
If I drive 9 hours take 8 hour sleeper berth break, drive 1 hour and take 2 hour off duty break. Will I have 10 hours after my 2 hour break?

Yes, you will have 10 hours of drive time after the 2 hour break, but if you only take an 8 hour break after that you will only have 1 hour of drive time.

Basically you add up the drive time before and after a break.

I punched this question into Chat GPT and the answer was 10 hours:

Remember, long break must be in sleeper. Too many people not using split-break a lot assume off-duty and sleeper berth are the same. I would log both breaks in the sleeper to avoid confusion. I also didn't use split-break more than 3-4 times in decades.

The key is to stop driving BEFORE you run out of hours, otherwise only a 10 hour break will give you time again. The most common circumstance asked about on the forum is a driver that has driven 11 hours, and wants something that allows him to start driving before a 10 hour break.

We use the split sleeper berth A LOT...almost everyday sometimes, driving trucks for drum & bugle corps every summer...drive the marching band to housing/practice site 6hrs at night, sleep 7hrs at housing site as band practices, drive marching band to performance site 1hr during afternoon, rest at performance site 5hrs as band warms-up/gets into uniform/performs/packs-up/eats, then another 4hrs night drive.

I used it yesterday to not have to use personal conveyance to leave a shipper...10hr break, pre-trip on-duty, drive, pickup, drive, deliver, drive, arrive at pickup with only 1.75 left on my 14 available and learn that the "drop/hook" changed to live-load...so, my option? Personally convey to nearest safest spot after live-load...or, what ended happening was that the live-load was long enough to be 2hrs off-duty, so then I drove to truck stop 30min away with 1.75hrs left on my clock (rather than 0min & personal conveyance), post-trip on-duty, then get into sleeper berth and slept 10hrs.

So, to sum it up: 10off-work-2off-work-10sleeper

Here is what it looked like :

It doesn't have to be exactly 8/2 or 7/3. It can be 8.25/3.5 or 7.75/5 just as long is the shortest break is 2 at the minimum and the sleeper break is 7 at the minimum AND that they both add up to 10 or more.

    blairandgretchen and silverspur Thank this.

    Thanks.

I've been on ELD for 10 years, and have never understood, nor kept up with the changes in that time. Generally I never have to use it till today.

I had to let the ELD tell me when I could drive, I was puzzled that it had me legal with the last 24 hours schedule.

Hats off to you guys that can figure it all out in advance. It was the least of my concerns for 2 days.
