You must be in one of those 'proper English' states - in Missouri we call a state cop a 'burr' - unless he's in a pick-em up truck, then he's a "dizzle burr".

We're not very PC here either. You may note that I referred to said 'burr' as a 'he', not that it couldn't be a 'she', it's just we don't have many of them 'please pull me over and frisk me' troopers here.

Interesting how this varies among states.

I had a better understanding in Missouri when it came to organizing police escorts for a load. They have this state divided into 'Troop Headquarters' - lettered A,B,C,D etc. Multiple counties in each troop hq. We started from Troop D, with 2 troopers, and they returned at the end of the day - the second day the next 2 came out of a Troop HQ closer to where we were.

I notice they also are called in on some criminal matters - I think officer involved shootings was one.

interesting, there are a couple of drivers on here who used to be DOT or cops. TroopertoTrucker, maybe? Not sure I have it right.

I'd love to hear some input from these guys on what's what too. Seems like great info for any interstate driver to know.

I hate to pick on jersey state police cause I spend alot of time there but they really need to update from having the ugliest patrol vehicles and those uniforms look like something out of marching band .

A sworn police officer has jurisdiction in his entire state. He can issue citations or make arrests even out of state if the crime was committed in his state, so thinking you're safe if you can make it across the border doesn't fly. The local police agency has jurisdiction where the crime was commited. And is in charge of any investigations. You'll notice when a big time crime is commited, the local agency will "call in" and ask for assistance from both state police and FBI. But as I said, the locals are in charge. All police personnel have a patrol area, to keep things in order. I have seen (on TV show COPS) cities that have personnel that can patrol anywhere in their jurisdiction.

The word trooper has been used for over 120 years by the way for almost all state law enforcment officers. It is interchangable with the word cop or police officer.

Many state law enforcement agencies also have mutual assistance agreements with neighboring states and even beyond that .
A few years ago when the Lakota souix in north dakota were protesting a pipeline and getting ugly Nebraska sent several troopers up there to help nd state patrol.

In the case of certain felonies, yes. Generally speaking stay in your lane/jurisdiction.

Here in Sconnie the State Patrol has jurisdiction over the whole state however they specialize according to State mandate which will generally be on your individual states corresponding website. For example:

"Mission Statement" Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of State Patrol (DSP)

It's the County boys you need to be wary of. County Sheriffs typically have the most power in the States where they are elected and not appointed. They answer to no one ESPECIALLY if they are at the end of their careers and dont care about re election.
