Although they all can be called "bears", "Full Grown" was a trooper with a marked car, with of without light bars. "Plain wrappers" were unmarked cars. There is also County Mounties and City Kitties. DOT may be called Diesel Bears. Here in the Arkansas, Texas and the Oklahoma areas that I run most, the DOT cops carry guns and will pull over cars speeding in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately many local and county police forces have been given authority to train some cops to do DOT inspections. Especially in Texas.

We never messed with trucks unless they were breaking a traffic law. Even then we treated it like a normal stop. Now if there was a collision involving one we would get DOT to come out and check out the truck but we handled the collision.

Maybe the word "authority" instead of jurisdiction. And yes, getting to the next county/state won't get you free.

DOT officers in Louisiana just got certified to carry firearms within the last 25 years. I remember when it happened as I was familiar with 2 local officers (& had their cell numbers) when I worked for Waste(d) Management in the '90s & early 2000's.
LSP made some changes in "titles" along about that same time. DOT vehicles are white with a light gray stripe & have "TS" with up to 3 numbers on their licence plate. The "TS" stands for "Traffic Safety".... WHAT??? Yep. How they came up with that for DOT officers, I have no idea.
And FYI, they can stop 4 wheelers or any other vehicle on state & fed hwys. They are state police, but are assigned to DOT/FMCSA enforcement. They can also do escorts for oversize etc.

The key word is State, their jurisdiction is the entire State.

There was a time that the state line dictated something but those laws were all changed many years ago. Being in pursuit they can cross the border and still nab you.
The distinction is really where they can start pursuing you.

Iowa recently rolled their motor carrier division into the State Patrol after they lost a lawsuit couple years ago from some four wheeler who rightfully claimed they didn't have authority to make a traffic stop of a four-wheeler.

South Dakota is adding Troopers to their truck safety program, where it used to be almost exclusively just weighMasters. North Dakota has done pretty much the same thing, I don't think they have any weigh Masters left now.

Here in Colorado, the d o t cops have always been part of the state patrol, but the scale Masters used to be part of a different department( Department of Revenue, if I remember correctly) . After they did away with the ton Mile tax they switched all of them over into the State Patrol

I was inspected at the Limon POE @2009. Guy really nit-picked. He called a DOT cop because of the Hazmat I was hauling and thought was in violation. Dot guy told me that there was nothing wrong and that the guy was hoping to be able to give me a high dollar ticket. He said they they were Dept of Revenue employees, and that seemed to him, and many other was a conflict of interest. Said that changing their duties to the state patrol was coming soon.
