You can always spot the old hands in their fours...cruising along down the road with Mama riding shotgun, big whip antenna on the top. I will pick up the mic and holler a thanks. Tough old bas ards. Got loads of respect for the old hands.
I was there, but I was just starting out. Man was trucking rugged in those days. Why flash a driver over? Not necessary, just common courtesy. Used to wave at another driver when passing too.
Now everyone acts like a bunch of cowards. Turn the CB off because you're afraid. Avoid full service truckstops because youre afraid. Driving down the road with your side curtains closed because you're afraid. Walk around staring at your phone because you're afraid. Avoid owner operators because you're afraid. Run for rates that we would have turned down 30 years ago because you're afraid to demand more. Start driving at 10 am and parked by 2pm because your afraid of the dark. Shut down 2 days before the storm hits because you're afraid.
"Oh, I don't want to be courteous to another driver. My trainer said that I could be held liable in court for being courteous!"
Absolutely amazing.DoneYourWay, Joetro, MZdanowicz and 4 others Thank this. -

Flashing another driver over is fine. With high beams at night is not. Chaps my hide when people do that. The last thing I need when moving back over is to be blinded by some clown's high beams in my mirror. If you have constant-on lights, don't do anything. I'll be fine.
MZdanowicz, KW Cajun, americanmadetrucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
This is for ALL new truck company "design engineers" (who I'd feel safe to say have never even driven a semi):
On the subject of the Courtesy Interrupt Switch...
There is only one place it should be located. That is,, at the end of the turn signal lever.
What trucker wants to have to reach to the dashboard every time he/she wants to flash another trucker over?!
It's sooooo much easier and safer when it's on the turn signal lever.
Got it? Thank you.MZdanowicz Thanks this. -
I don't trust flashing. I've had people flash their lights when I'm just barely clear of them.

I'd just whip right over right then, real quick to the right lane. Even scrape some of their bumper chrome!
They may think twice after that, about being too quick on the switch.
Seriously, with a little bit of experience, you really "know" when to pull back over.MZdanowicz Thanks this. -
I don't want to try any sort of whipping with a tanker. I get a sick pit in my stomach just coming into a curve too quick.KW Cajun Thanks this.

Just jokin on the first part, CJ.
Tankers golden rule is "slow & easy movement" all the time.Criminey Jade Thanks this.
