Driving on a 2 lane late the other night. The headlights that were slowly getting closer in the mirror catch up to me and follow nice and close for a little bit, peaking out frequently.

Part way around a corner he makes his move to the oncoming lane to go by me. The road is now straight and flat yet there is still a double yellow line. I let up on the fuel to get him by quicker. He's about halfway up my trailer and I see headlights through the trees ahead to the left. So I apply the brakes a bit, he gets by me, I toggle the headlights and call out 'come on over'.

He just keeps on going in the oncoming lane. The little voice told me this could be ugly and I slowed some more. So now this guys is probably 2 hundred yards ahead of me as the lights off to the left get to the highway and start to turn right off of the side road.

At the last instant the pickup coming onto the highway realized the approaching lights were in his lane and did a quick move onto the shoulder at about the same time as the big truck realized what was about to happen and did a quick move back to the right side of the road.

We all see a lot of close calls but this one was really close. Unlikely anyone in the pickup would have survived what almost happened.

What are some close calls you had or seen?

Been a few over the years--but remember this one like yesterday--I-4 west(fla) about 2 miles after the begining of I-4 off I-95 going west--there is a long righthand curve(actually where the road use to end--the west bound lanes go under the eastbound off ramp for US92--and there is a connector road from westbound US92 to I-4
Anyway--I am about 1/4 mile from underpass--and all of a sudden the entire underpass in front of me is lit up(now at this point eastbound traffic--is about 50yds thru woods and the underpass is a left hand exit from eastbound--so bridge doesnt cross eastbound) It takes my feeble tired (4AM) mind a sec to realize THERE IS SOMEONE COMING AT ME on my side of Interstate--can't see yet due to curve and underpass--by now I have a guardrail to my right and a wall to my left!
This idiot in a full sized caddy--with his highbeams on--blows by me in the left lane with his hibeams on--going the other way! he just flying along as if he is in the right lane on his side of road!
Loooong time ago--but I get shivers just thinking about it!

I was cruising through WY on 80 when I suddenly caught a glimpse of 2 deer standing on the road. There was one in my lane and one in the other lane. In a split second decision, instead of hitting the deer in my lane, I aimed for the empty space between the two deer. The deer ran opposite directions. It wasn't a jerky turn move or anything. To people behind me, it looked like I was just changing lanes.

I haven't had any close calls with cars, thank goodness. Just the few idiots who speed up to get ahead of me and then hit their brakes to turn or make their exit.

I did have a close call at a truck stop. I was just finishing my dinner as the guy next to me sat down and began telling his life story. I paid my bill and left. Dodged that bullet!
