For the life of me i cant figure why anyone would want to run 3000 miles a week doing this crap. Thats about 2000 more than i run most weeks.

I dont do that well..but 6 or a bit less, depends what I am pulling. Slowing down also saves tire wear, and lots of aggravation. Imo. Not always running up on someone and muttering out loud. Let'em run up on me and mutter. I have done the numbers also, looking at potential savings in fuel. Mayby someday I will sell and trade for one that gets great mpgs. Hope its not a trade off for a shop queen.Brettj3876, Rideandrepair, rachi and 3 others Thank this.

I don’t know what each individual truck gets, but our fleet that we run regularly averages 5-5.5 mpg each quarter. 1995 Freightliner Classic, 1994 379 Pete, and 1994 W900 KW. The KW pulls a 50 ton lowboy and is almost always heavy and/or oversized. The FL and Pete pull Landoll type trailers. If we are getting those numbers pulling what we do, I don’t see why somebody pulling a van couldn’t at least get 6 or more.

Had a meeting with my accountant today and got some bad news. With my low maintenance costs and low fuel costs I don’t even get to keep this truck for two full years. I have to take my new one before the end of this year. Worst part is now the cabover is on hold until next spring.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Im in a 6 truck fleet of million plus mile hood trucks. We dont expect more than 5mpg in appalachia @80k and i have yet to see a repair cost us more than 7k, and that was an out of frame. We do all our own repairs and rarely stay down more than 2 days. The pete store and worldwide deliver our parts daily and our hats are free.
lynchy, Rideandrepair, rachi and 2 others Thank this. -
On a Cummins, if you have all the parts with you, you can start Saturday morning and be done Sunday night. In 6 hours you can have an N14 down to block and getting ready for new rods and mains to go in. Someone that has had the opportunity to rebuild an abundance of the Big Cam or N14 could do it eyes closed. Price for genuine Cummins parts will run around 2500 with new heads. 700$/each on the heads (when I rebuilt mine).
The N14 you could do just about any repair on the side of the road. Fuel pump, injectors, and water pump I have all done in a parking lot or a ramp. I ran the overhead at a customers before.
Just saying, some of these engines you can do marvelous things to in a short time.lynchy, haycarter, Rideandrepair and 9 others Thank this. -
People that don't do any wrenching or haven't even seen the hood open on a n14 or 12.7 can't fathom how easy they are to work on. All they know is the dealer had their isx for 3 days and it cost 1500 to run the over head so obviously no one could do an n14 in an hour or two.Last edited: Feb 12, 2020
