In 2006 Werner partnered with the department of labor and the department of veterans affairs to start the industry's first professional truck driver apprenticeship program. OK disclaimer I have never been employed or had any business with the big blue. Now let us mull over these numbers as the 12 guys who like big blue get their defense ready. Werner's fleet is about 7300 power units ( info from website) and in just over 10 years JUST the apprentice program has generated almost 5 times the fleet size. This is mind boggling no other apprentice program with a failure rate this high would even bother to continue. When will HR at the big blue admit they are complete failures ?

Maybe OP should drive to Omaha and ask.

No ties to Werner, but as long as they have a supply of fresh bodies walking in the front door willing to sign up and take out a loan, they will continue to operate a school with a dismal failure rate. It is not just the school that is failing, it is also their Recruitment Department and their failure to properly screen and interview prospective employees and weed out those that will most likely fail. This is not just a Werner problem, but an industry problem.

Obviously, Werner is aware of their turnover rate. Just as obviously, they don't care.

Must be some big money in cycling through so many people in such a short time, I guess.

The bigger question one should ask is do you want to work for a company that has gone through 35,000+ drivers in 10 years?

TBH its a great program and Werner has met the requirements of the Department of Labor and Veterans Administration. The fact that its 35000 since the program started in 2006 isnt that bad. Thats an average of 3100ish driver a year. How many non-veterans or veterans who didnt qualify for the program are hired? The veterans who are in the program earn extra money ($1293 a month BAH rate for Omaha NE) and get apprenticeship time towards a certification. It will help veterans gain financial stability as they transition out of the military and into a new career as a professional driver. Its also for veteran spouses.

FYI to become an 'Apprentice' you have to do 2 years of service. It's not the same thing as being a trainee.

That still doesn't mean the numbers aren't staggering.

I'd presume that is part of the #'s caveat.

I'd met many guys (in my 14 months there) who'd served over two years. All but one squirrely little meth-mouthed ####er were pleasant, gregarious dudes.

The company might blow, as many would perceive, but the cats towing the line are generally alright.
