So as I came into CO on i-25 earlier today, (technically yesterday I suppose - 4/23) the digital signs were warning of high winds and said something like "high profile and light vehicles use alternate route". It wasn't bad so I kept going. Well it must've been really bad at some point before I got there! I counted 7 different trucks/trailers just laying on their sides north of Pueblo. All just sitting there. No recovery vehicles or police. Just some cones and caution tape. But it really got me wondering, how do you know (or how can you know) when it is too windy?

Check weather conditions on internet sites like weather.com or AccuWeather for NOAA advisories and warnings. Also, NOAA has a website at digital.weather.gov that gives pretty detailed weather info. The site is kind of clunky, so you need both a decent internet signal and patience. But, alot of good weather info available on it.

As a relatively new person to Colorado, I learned pretty quick, obey the signs, these people have dealt with this for generations. If the signs say it's dangerous for high profile vehicles, it's going to be dangerous for high profile vehicles. Can't get any more explicit than that. Not to bash you, but you exhibited the classic behavior, "how bad could it possibly be"? "Can't happen to me",,"everything is fine",, well, these idjits laying on their side, most empty, I'm sure, wish they had heeded that advice. No cops? They are overwhelmed, I bet. Almost comical, in a way. Next time, if empty, or light, wait it out, or take a different route. Years ago, we didn't have weather apps or info boards, but today, there's no excuse.

I know a guy who got blown over in Colorado,he also got a ticket because he ignored the signs saying “Road closed to light high profile vehicles”
He had 30k in the box, got blown over on driver side in the median.
He got failure to follow Road Closed sign ticket, plus loss of control of a motor vehicle, ended up being kinda like a wreckless driving ticket.
Plus he was a lease op for Landstar, so it put him out of business because he wrecked his truck.
The old saying if it’s to bad, icy, windy, and so on, you’re driving at your own risk.Another Canadian driver, Sirscrapntruckalot, austinmike and 8 others Thank this. -

We went through Nebraska and South Dakota wind was stupid crazy. I could not get my truck to go over 65 mph. I was driving in the wind for about 5 hrs. Then my husband took over and drove for about 3 hrs. So here we sit in South Dakota still windy as crap and looks like we missing our 8 am appointment Monday in Kellogg Idaho. Roads closed in rapid city just 1 1/2 hrs from us. I can’t stand the could weather. We should of took different load that went to Texas. I guess next time we will know. Live and learn.
