Today I loaded out of a new quarry I’d never been to. When I left I took a different route back to the highway and found a nasty surprise. I came upon the steepest hill I’ve ever descended in a truck. I put it in 5th with jakes on full but it wasn’t enough. I rode it out as long as I could, and before I figured I was either gonna burn up the brakes or blow the motor I came around a bend and saw a long flat at the bottom and upshifted and let it roll out. First time my *sshole has puckered like that. Besides surveying my route next time, how should I descend a grade like that. It was a stone and oil town road no dividing lines. The grade was only about 1/2 mile long but curved and I was going in blind. Is it alright to crawl at like 15mph?

Hey man in that situation and being only in fifth, hard brake and pull over on the shoulder to a complete stop. Restart and glide into the proper Jake brake gear

    Hell yes!!!

You go as slow as is required by weight and grade. Especially if you’re in unfamiliar territory. I’ve pissed more than one local yahoo off in this kind of situation.

But I’m alive and still driving. So I win.

To be honest, I’ve left a nice trail of smoke once or twice. Not fun unless it’s coming from my stacks

I always like to think about how much MORE pissed they'd be if they had to wait while my wrecked truck/spilt load gets cleaned up...

    DOWNSHIFT!!!
Don’t be afraid to downshift going downhill. You knew early enough you were in the wrong gear and had plenty of brakes to lower your rpms to shift.
Practice on other hills so you know you can do it.

There are some truly severe slopes out there. If you have to take them in 1st gear to navigate safely, then take them in first gear. Safety First.
