any of you more experienced hands that have dealt with wyoming and running oversize can help me out here? what is the process to get permits in wyoming? i have a easy 11-6 wide legal weight and height load headed westbound i-90. ended up routing myself up thru bfe north dakota then to montana instead because i dont really understand what is required when entering wyoming and didnt wanna get stuck. the way i read their website you have to call ahead to the port of entry and get a secret password, and then they issue you permits at the poe? is that right? ballpark cost for what a legal weight overwidth permit would cost for wyoming? routing thru ND cost 30 bucks and 100 extra miles.. any experienced info for wyoming and insider information is appreciated. thanks

If you call ahead to the port of entry, couldn't you ask them all these questions?
They would have the correct answers, by the way.

Call the POE 24 hrs ahead, have all your dims and numbers ready. They’ll enter it in and give you a number.

Drop in, go inside, work out a route, should be $27.25.

I’ve found them very polite and helpful.

They are picky about the measurements too. We used to haul beams and joists out of OR out to Casper and would always just tell them the material was 60 foot. Well that worked great until someone at Evanston went out and measured one of our trucks and figured out the beams were anywhere from 60’3” to 60’5”. So we had to start measuring the beams so we could give them the exact length of the longest one.

Wyoming is stupid about a lot of things.

It’s more expensive for weight but the process is the same

Also you don’t have to call 24 hours ahead, but I suggest at least two

couple other things you need to know (they are more than willing to give a financial reminder…)

first, the pre clearance number is a must. If you are buying weight as 5 or 6 axle pad the weight you ask as they will weigh/measure you every time. They only charge for what they weigh you at.

second, have all you axles on the ground and if you have a flip axle have it on the ground. This will make your life easier.

Third, you must always weigh before parking - do not go to the job-scale side of the scale house. They can/May write you a ticket for not following the instructions.

Last, know in advance of you are going to require a pilot car or two. You are expected to run fr the state line or loading location to the scale WITH your required pilot cars or again - possible doom.

there are other steps if you are going to fall into the super load category but mostly as 5/6 axle you won’t need it.

hope this helps - they are not always a holes - keep a good positive attitude and it will likely go well.
