I am planning on buying my own truck and trailer sometime soon. A small local company I spoke with recently gave me the option of getting my own authority and let them arrange my loads for a percentage. This way I would be independent without the stress of finding loads. Supposedly they would treat me as one of their own drivers and keep me busy. Is this a realistic proposition?
Getting my authority vs leasing on.

That depends on their operation. In general, these types of arrangements are not real good and sometimes a bit shady. They really don't have a strong incentive to fight for good rates for you, it's really pretty easy to take 10% of average loads when you're paying all the bills and taking all the risk. And if they don't have broker authority, then will they be asking you to haul the loads on their authority or yours ? can be a bit sketchy.
Don't get me wrong, I don't know anything about this company or details of how they intend to arrange these loads for you. I'm just saying what I have seen in these type of arrangements.blairandgretchen and big belly Thank this. -
I agree w what Danny said. I have my own authority and sometimes I wish I was leased on to a carrier that has a lot of the freight I want but when I have an awesome week it reminds me why I like being on my own, kind of like golf, once in a while you play a really good game and reminds why you keep on coming back to play.

And . . . if YOU take the time to establish rapport with brokers under your own authority, then YOU have control over the better paying/ easier freight / rate negotiations.
I can't see involving another finger in the pie - ( my dumb company driver 2 cents ). -

many think getting their own authority will increase their earnings by 25 per cent, they forget that their costs go up as well over being leasedblairandgretchen Thanks this. -

It sounds as if the company is wanting to run a company truck but without the responsibility of owning a truck.
