So i was scrolling thru Truckpaper for a 389 or T660 since i live in CA i have to buy an emissions truck so i came across a 2012 389 with 415k miles on a Cummins 485hp 18spd 3.36 rears on 24.5lp tires and an APU for $85k.
The other truck is a 2012 Kenworth T660 (ex swift truck) with 411k miles on chassis and 57k miles on a crate engine 450hp Cummins 13spd 3.42 rears on 22.5lp tires NO APU for $81k. I like both trucks especially the 389 but what had me leaning more towards the KW is the Crate engine so i want to get your guy's opinion on which truck would you buy?
Crate engine or 415k mile truck purchase?

Right away I gotta wonder why the T660 needed a crate engine already. Like did the lease operator run it dry on oil? If he took such poor care of the engine how did he do on the chassis, suspension, transmission etc. I have seen those guys drag their trailers through deep ditches and over large boulders which can twist frame rails like pretzels. Oftentimes they run team with brand new students 'grind em til you find em' types.

Those are the same questions i had, but then again I've seen other trucks with these same engines overhauled at 250-400k miles so i figured maybe the engine that was originally on this truck was un repairable

You would need to see some paperwork, also question the dealer if he knows the history etc.

Buy a truck with a 1994-1995 engine and run it. carb compliant till 2016.
-
That would work the problem is that i go into the ports so i have to have a compliant truck

Have 1 2012 KW T660 that KW replaced the 450 HP CUMMINS with a crate engine at 300,000 miles and by the sounds of things they did a lot of them. Had lot of engine problems from 1,000 mile mark was 1 of the first 2012's in 2011 had a lot of warranty claims / repairs and then POOF it was toast , remedy was new motor and no problems since
