Every time I key up my onguard faults out and gives a system error. I have to shut the truck down and restart it to reset the onguard. Sometimes also my qualcomm will divert to the home screen when I key up. I'm running a galaxy 98 wired directly to the batteries with 8ga wire and a Wilson 2000 on a bird perch (I tried a predator 10k but couldn't get the swr down). My standing wave is still pretty high but other than that I'm not sure what I can do to shield the truck from the interference the radio is causing. Any suggestions would be great.

Hell, two years ago if my CB shorted out the onguard I had I woulda bought a second CB, turn it to another channel and tape the talk button down

Depending upon how close your high-powered "CB" is to the Qualcomm and OnGuard ("OnStar"? haven't heard of the other), it's likely that either you're simply de-sensing the receivers in the other two devices by having a large electromagnetic field nearby, or your Galaxy export has been incorrectly tuned for maximum power with no observation given to the frequencies it's spraying out across the RF spectrum --- and lots of it.

Just for S&G, do you get the same problem(s) when you use a box-stock CB instead of that Galaxy? If a stock CB fixes the problems, then get your Galaxy to a "real" shop, where the techs have such niceties as a spectrum analyzer to make sure all the power it transmits is on the frequency you've dialed up, and not all over the CB range and several bands above and below.

When a transmitter (any transmitter, in any radio service) gets "spurious", the antenna begins to function as a somewhat crude bandpass filter, allowing *only* the frequencies it's made for to pass out into the ether. Harmonics and other out-of-band signals are rejected by the antenna, causing them to set up standing waves on your coax, where the extra power is eventually dissipated as heat. And some of that power is likely to be traveling on the outside of the coax shield, whence it radiates nearby as if it were an antenna itself, and into things it shouldn't ----- like your Qualcomm and other device.

First thing to try, then, would be a stock, un-Golden-Screwdrivered CB in place of the Galaxy. If the problems go away, you're well on your way to solving the problem.

LoL, it wouldn't be so bad if it didn't disable the cruise control along with it.

Onguard is a brake assist/cruise control assist thing. Won't be much help but I had a problem when I key up it dim my dash and qc. I realize my ground wire was loose. I bought a 12v plug and wire it there and just use a 12v to power my cb. Work so far

Thank you, w.h.o. I are not a trucker; biggest rigs I've ever driven have been a 70-foot aerial ladder and 3,000 gallon water tanker/pumpers. I appreciate learning more about trucks than the typical "climb in and install this thing" to which I'm exposed :)

It does not do it with a box stock cb. I ordered this one from Walcott cause I had heard good things about them but obviously that doesn't mean squat. I've got the power scaled way back in the radio but the problem persists. I'll have to have it checked out at some point. I also need to bond the truck cause as itstands iI can't really talk on the radio till I get my swr down anyway.

I would imagine the output of your transmitter, even though the power is throttled back, is still so rife with spurious signals that some of them are still getting into your other gear. If you're up to paying for a half-hour of time at a commercial shop somewhere (i.e., a place that works on Kenwood, Motorola, Racal, or Icom land mobile equipment), getting your Galaxy tuned properly, instead of having had it merely tuned for "maximum smoke", may well be worth the money, especially for such a nice rig as yours.

By the way, for the folks who've wondered and asked me, "What in the cornbread hell is that CB with the puke green finish on it, and the 60-year-old microphone?" in my avatar....

It's an Amplidyne Labs Model 621 VHF transmitter, capable of putting out just about 60 watts on the 6 Meter band (50-54 MHz), 2 Meters (144-148 MHz) and, with an accessory Model 221 transverter, the 1.25 Meter band (222-225). They were made only for a couple of years back when I first had my Novice license, in 1962. They were capable of only AM and CW ("Morse). The mic is an American Microphone Company model 3, crystal element. The whole rig works like new still.

The smaller green box on top is the Model 261 VFO, for all three bands.

Now to find a decent receiver for 2M and 6M with a BFO...... <sigh>

I wouldn't have posted, but a few folks have asked in the past two days.

    Sorry for the mini-hijack.
