I was at a different trucking forum and the following question was asked and I think it's an excellent question ( thanks to General Lee for the question)
Do you fuel your big truck while its running? Do you fuel your personal vehicle while its running?
If you do then why? If you don't then why?
Just curious on the particulars here because I was having a discussion with a friend on why this is or isn't dangerous.

No shut them all off at present!
Due to the price of fuel ,even motorcycle..
Usually leave it run fuel and go!
Most fuel fire are started from a Spark or a flame !
Gasoline can fire off rather quickly , Diesel not so quick.
Pretty much personal preference , but we have all heard the Claims and the danger stories ! lol

Gasoline refueled while shut off
Diesel refueled while running.
As for why, who knows, I will say my job is refueling semi-tractors and huge V12 diesels in the field and these for the most part are all done running. The only time they shut them off is when the company man calls it a day or the job is done. -
I always shut the truck OFF. Why? So I could check the oil at the same time.
The Challenger, larry2903, Rollover the Original and 2 others Thank this. -
I shut the truck off, but I idle it down for a couple minutes before I actually turn it off.
larry2903, I am medicineman, libertasvelnex and 4 others Thank this. -
Flammable or explosive hazmat? You MUST turn the truck off.
I have a five minute idle engine cutoff (that can be overridden with the cruse control) that I let run out to make sure my turbo has cooled off from highway temp. That usually is the time it takes to get the pump turned on. So I guess off for me.Rollover the Original Thanks this. -
In my personal gasoline powered pickup I usually just left it running while refueling. Wintertime when it was cold out, I could get the pump started and hop back in with the heat on. Summertime, same thing but with A/C on. Never had a problem.
Big truck out here, hop out while it is running to swipe cards and start the pumps. Left it running only a couple times as an experiment (also to cool down the engine from after running for hours, or to keep it in the warm-up if I'm fueling first thing to start the day) to see if it would bring up some kind of log violation. No problems yet, may continue. -
The only time I have left either vehicle running while fueling is due to the fact that the battery got drained and if I stop the motor, it will stay stopped.

all gas vehicals should be shut off, if you leave it running your going to end up blowing yourself up, your fuel pump and sending unit as well as the gas going into the tank cause static.
I'm a A&P Licensed Aircraft Mechanic and a Auto Mechanic, trust me! lol
As for diesels do what you want, I leave my F-250 running just because I dont want to keep cranking it up starters arnt exactly cheap, and usually by the time my EGT's come down to shut it off i'm all ready full.
As for my big truck i shut it off, only because its really loud and i dont wanna hear that crap haha Its loud enough while driving (freight shaker)
American TruckerWiseguywireless Thanks this. -
You don't shut a hot truck off. We run 24 hrs during harvest, we fueled with truck running. Now, if you can cool it down, let it idle for 10 minutes or so, then we would shut it off. Only what i have been told and taught.....don't rip me on this. Thanks in advance.
scottied67 Thanks this.
