Hey all,
I took my CDL test at the DMV today, and got my license!!!!! I am scheduled for orientation in Pittston, PA on Apr. 13th, so I can provide my current employer 2 weeks notice. I will have to go back to the DMV to get my tanker endorsement, and I'll probably go ahead and take the doubles/triples test while I'm there. I am pretty excited (and more than a little anxious/nervous), but it all seems so surreal right now. I have wanted to drive trucks since I was in highschool, but wasn't old enough to drive interstate when I graduated. Decided to join the Air Force for a couple of years (turned into a 19 year career), then pursue trucking. Retired from the Air Force, and tried to do a "regular" job in manufacturing. Don't really enjoy the work, and through a series of well timed events and circumstances I was able to get Uncle Sam to pay for my school, as well as continue collecting a pay check while in school. Anyway, I am kind of rambling on. Is anyone else headed to PA for orientation Apr. 13th? I will be travelling South Carolina (don't have my travel details yet), and think it would be cool to have someone to commiserate with on "THE DOG", for at least part of the 600 mile trek.

Welcome in advance, and glad to hear your able to give a long time dream a chance.
I, too, came back to this after a long "other career" & retirement.
Haven't regretted the decision in the least, and haven't looked back since.
Best of luck to you. I hope it's everything your looking for.

Best of Luck.
You should have a decent 2nd career. -
The career field I was in has very little direct correlation to anything in the civillian world, unless I were to work with a gov't contractor. I could put some of my supervisory experience to use in areas such as manufacturing, but I'm currently working in a plant, and have come to realize I don't want to remain in that kind of environment.
I have WANTED to pursue truck driving for a long time, and when all the variables lined up and fell into place like they did, I knew I needed to jump on the opportunity. I can't say for sure that I will enjoy trucking, but I'll never know unless I pull the trigger.
As for the "low pay", I know I'm not going to set the world on fire. Trucking will pay more than my current job (please don't calculate what I will get paid /hr, in the AF when you figure that you are on call 24/7/365, we got paid way less), and my retirement pads my income nicely. This allows me to work doing what I WANT to do not what I HAVE to do.FullMetalJacket, albert l and Bumper Thank this. -
I will be at orientation with you on the 13th as long as my road test goes will next tuesday!!
