Clutches were not always hydraulic linkage, It takes quite a bit of stomping power even on an old car to engage/disengage on a cold winter morning.
Just like auto transmission on heavy trucks, until recently the technology was too cumbersome to be practical. That is about the best I can think of -

Awful isn't it.Darnit we need our sleep.Too bad we just cant push a few buttons like GPS and let the truck drive it self,lol.
