I am still in school so as of right now I feel a million miles away from a trucking job.
I am currently looking at a regional type job where I will be home every weekend for both days. that is my goal. Anyway, with that being said how do companies feel about you extending your weekend into an extra day? Say coming home on Thursday for a Fri-Sun weekend or a Sat-Mon weekend? Of course this would not be all the time. But how flexible is your personal time? Can you request an extra day at home during the week prior before you stop or is it something you have to notify and plan out 2-3 weeks in advance? And if you do request this extra day does there have to be a legit reason? (doctor's appt etc) Or do they just not care to hear a reason?
thanks

depends on the company. but generally, your home for the weekend long enough for a 34 basically.
some companies are out and back. out and back. so you can usually be home for the night.
they'll usually have you home for a doc appointment. and there are other variables. but it all depends on the company. some are hard on you. some are soft. -
Yea I know every company is different. Just not really liking the "only home 34 hours" and back out. I'd prefer some sort of balance, I know its out there just have to find it.
My instructor in class was talking to us and was telling us about "back in his day" He would run 5 14 hour days and have 3 days off and how since he was single at the time he would always spend his 3 days somewhere different. Sound very romantic doesn't it? LOL. Of course this was 15+ years ago since he has been at the school at least that long. -
Sounds like your instructor still thinks hes at a coffee counter spinin yarns.... First thing to learn bout ol drivers, if there speakin maybe it did happen quite how they remeber.

My job is flexible, if I want three days off sometimes I would have to make up a day down the road.

With some companies 2 days off means 48 hours so if you get to your terminal on a Friday at 5:00 pm you would be expected back at work by 5:00 PM on Sunday. New drivers many times think that companies would expect you back Monday at 7:00 AM.

First good luck with getting a regional gig. 2nd trucking companies make money by keeping those wheels rolling. So unless you have some serious skills making them money in other ways. You might want to forget about all these extra days off. Your bank account will also be hurting from multiple day's off. In reality plan on getting home Saturday morning and leaving Sunday night or early Monday morning. You feel a long way from a trucking job. Because you are dreaming. They don't give 2 craps about personal time. They care about getting there customers freight delivered. You will also be so wore out. All you will do is sleep and back to work you go.
browndawg Thanks this. -
when i was running regional it went like this: winnipeg - eagan mn
week one 3 trips
monday 1900 depart last trip return aprox 1100hrs sun
week two 2 trips
tuesday 1900 depart last trip return sat aprox 1100hrs sat.
now this is on paper, waiting for my switch to show up or problems crossing through customs delayed me regulary. but on paper thats 1 full day and aprox 2 half days home A WEEK. The key word here is week. with regonal freight you see home more often then OTR drivers do. the flip side for OTR is generaly out for 7 days would equal a day off. so if out for 3 weeks 3 days off. Some of us cant sit at home for that long so 3 weeks is 2 days.
so for regional i can see the part days but as for OTR when i come home noon sunday thats not part of my "days off" thats a working day i start at 0400 till noon thats 8 hour day. so wensday 0500 truck is packed and ready.
