I have a 1999 carrier reefer ultra fresh 2 unit. The unit will not shut off in auto stop start mode. Alternator is putting out 13.6 volts but the unit itself is only putting out 12.6-12.8 volts (not enough to shut the unit down). It has a new battery, freon is charged, thermostat has been changed and the alternator is fairly new. I brought it to carrier service shop and they couldn't figure it out. They said maybe the computer was bad because it was only putting 12.6 volts out at the circuit. I had another computer laying around so I swapped it out and that didn't work. So what next????

Is it putting out 12.6 by display or multi-meter? Both computers give a 12.6 read? If the alt is putting out 13.6 but is only receiving 12.6 to the computer it seems as there is an overdraw coming from the computer or for some reason the alt and comp aren't "talking" to each other properly. Maybe a belt slipping the shop didn't catch?

Display unit is only showing 12.6 and I believe the tech had a multimeter on the circuit and said that it was only putting out 12.6 as well

Try putting on your spare ALT. too see if that changes reading on it?

Not running 12.6 volts would be normal. Running you should have at least 13.5V or the alternator is weak from worn brushes. You need to pull a multimeter or DVOM out and check it manually at the battery would be sufficient.

Still that has nothing to do with it not cycling. It sounds like a bad thermistor or relay. Do you have any fault codes stored? Is it holding box temperature? If it's not reaching temp it will run continuously. That would be that sensor in the top front of the box but that would throw a code.

When it's running on cycle raise the box temp and see if if it will cycle.

How do you stand that noisy thing? :)

I had the alternator pulled out and it was running 13.6-13.8 on the machine. Thermostat has been changed twice running water temp has been about 172-176. it cycles fine and holds temp fine. No fault codes are being thrown. Is the relay in the box behind the computer when you open up the doors on the computer side?

carrier had the unit for 3 hours but we had a load on and it needed to be delivered so time was cut short but still three hours is a good amount of time.

    baha Thanks this.

If the alternator is putting out good on the bench and then you have a voltage drop installed you have either a short or a bad cell in the battery. Something is drawing it down.

You have me confused with them conflicting statements. :biggrin_2552:

I have changed out batteries a couple times that's why it has a new battery. This problem isn't something that just started. I have been trying to problem solve it for awhile now. I thought you meant does it cycle from cold cycle to a heat cycle and it does that.

Are we to assume the unit has cooled the box and product to the set point and not struggling due to very warm product or a torn chute near the front? Is there at least 10 degrees difference (colder) between the output air and the return air?
