I'am setting in a motel room in North Little Rock. No whining, here's the straight truth about my Mav. Trans. experience- you call it like you want.

-Next month is my 2 yrs- where I'd have received a raise and 2 wks. vaca.
-My driving record is clean- no moving/no accidents- ever for accid (driving cars etc. since 14- now 30)
-never had a load shift, or lost anything- even at shipprs ect.
-always over secure over mav's regs
-always pick up and del. on time- maybe had 2 late del. if that in 2 yrs.
    -always "yes sir" "yes ma'm"

I rookied at mav, they are a good compay and have taken care of my family, until now.
    - When i didn't know any better as a rook, I ran my ### off and they never said a word.
-they often put loads that you can't make legally or #### close
-if you say your out of hours, they want to call and go over logs ( so i;ve heard- I've always had hours- one way or another)
    - I have safety points over a 2 yr. period as follows

    -2 pts.- scratched a bumper
    - 2pts.- for a dented alum. headach rack- times 2
    -2pts. for a log viol.
-1 pt. preventable over weight- not so preventable
-2 pts. dented door on trailer box
    - 3 pts. for coil secured prop. but touching trailer floor- (my one securement issue I feel terrible for)- I take sec. VERY seriously
-I now stand after classes at 6 pts.- because i was honest about knowledge of over weight.

2 driver charge backs 1 for prev. sec. issue, 1 for a fuel charge- no fuel on whole route on load that loaded late and received early- I made the mistake of trying to make it del. on time

-Over the last week I've heard that they are calling in drivers and firing them for points and no fuel bonus.
-Saw multiple drivers while I was there cleaning out there trucks while a guy walked around checking them in- never seen that type of activity in two yrs.

-My guess is that a good business man would decide that if the economy is getting ready to faulter, and you had to cut fat and save the company, a wise move would be to start calling in drivers b4 the slow season and can them for any points and no fuel bonuses. No warnings, no heads up.

-I was pulled into the little rock terminal, I had heard tail of this going on and specifically asked my fleet manager if my wife needed to find a baby sitter so she could come get me. She said "No." Then when I got there I was terminated like the rest of the drivers and my wife had to bring our baby girl from tulsa to pick me up- there is a terminal 2 hours from where i live in ft. smith. They could have sent me there, instead they offered a bus ticket. Think 2 yrs. of crap will fit on a bus?

    -summary;
I ran my ### off for this company, never complained about hours, always picked up and dropped on time, never damaged anyone else's property then the companies headache racks and a fender, picked up their saftety points for all the silly things they give them for, and was terminated do to a bad economy on a cut like my work for them didn't mean anything.
-I had a new fleet manager at the time, my fleet manager for the majority of the time I worked there new my work ethic and wanted me to come back on his board after a yr.- told him i wouldn't be back, h gave me cards and said "I know ur work ethic, use me for a refence and ill do evrything i can."

-you look at it how you want, I made mistakes- mostly trying to hard and not whining enuff, in my opionion.

I know that last year they were warning drivers that were not obtaining their fuel mileage goal that they were calling them in to see why they were not and training them on how to obtain it. They were told that if they did not meet the goal they would be let go. I know of a couple that had to go to this class. They were looking at the truck to determine if it was a truck issue or driver error.
I personaly have always gotten the fuel bonus and was in the top 1/3rd of 1500 trucks last year for fuel mileage. I know what my avg is before they tell me because I figure it myself every time I fuel. I can understand with the cost of fuel why a co with 1500 trucks wants you to get 6.7 mpg's as a avg. I am on my second truck with them and run this truck the same as my last one, but this truck is doing better than my last one for fuel mileage. My placing in the top 1/3rd was with my 1st truck. On the fillups I have had with this truck my worst fuel mileage was 6.4 my best has been 7.9. I am mostly in the 7's with some high 6's. The fuel bonus is somewhere from 1 cpm to 4 cpm
They have always been on a point system and all drivers are on the same point system. 6 points in one year will put you on automatic probation or possible termination action is based from the safety dept on your past history. Every driver can drop 2 points a year or they will fall off after 1 year.
I myself have had points and have went in too take classes to drop them. I myself do not like the point system, but if you would read the book that they put in your truck all drivers are under the same guidelines. A friend of mine from the same town I live in was let go last year because he maxed out on points. He also had a fuel mileage problem, but after he went to their class he brought his fuel mileage up. With the cost of fuel the days of hammering down and OOR miles is no longer acceptable.
It is messed up about your asking about if your wife needed to meet you there. I know what it is like to clean out a truck. When I left maverick I left on good terms. When I called about coming back I liked the fact that they asked where I was as they knew I was taking my truck back to the company I was quitting. They called me when I was cleaning out my truck and wanted to know if my wife was coming to get me or if I had a ride home? I told them she was there helping me clean out my truck.
Maverick has high standards and expects you to maintain that while you are with them. You have to keep a close eye on your points and your fuel mileage, but I will say they are fair across the boards.

I have no arguments and agree with your statements. As per fuel milage, in two years my truck was never over 64 mph. I had requested to leave it set back after rookie probationary period. Then they did the new prgram fuel where it adj. for your mpg to speed- and requested i get it. It still never went ovr 64 mph. the truck still never got fuel miles, they never calld me in for training othr then watching a video. I progressve shifted, and turned it off at reasonable times. As far as points we are all on the same sys. understood and is understandable. I just wnted to post the story for the education of othrs. I would have done things different had i had the acess to this info from the beginning. And i doubt their cutting this many drivers at once without there being a bigger cause.- in which its business and i don't blame them. My long term fleet manager actually wanted me to come back and was not to happy about this, but so it goes and ill move on- hopefully with some sound advice for future mav. employees, as i said, they did take care of my family. Don't take me wrong, this is why i say "take i as you wish" in my original post. I do have to add that i think they are more then willing to take advantage of a rookie's running hard and ect. for money, but will give their violations for anything. When a guy can get points for a fender, logging, and other minor offenses and have more points then a guy who totalled a trailer, and therefore be more elligable for termnination. Thats bad. But at the same time I must say that this system does offer you more freedom....and that means allot for a company driver. They have taught me allot, and that i appreciate.

I hate to hear that you lost your job. I hope things work out for you. You have 2 years exp you should be able to find a job soon. There was another driver on here that started from scratch and mav was his first job. He was a nice guy and I met him a few times and we would call each other. He ended up maxing out on points and was let go. After the fact he said he thought the reason he was let go is so that they could put another driver in the seat that would cook his books more than he did. I called him out on it saying he and I both knew that wasn't right.
Many thought I was coming down on him, but he had tore up equipment and had several strikes against him. He had went off on his FM more than once on the phone and mav will not tolerate a FM giving a driver a hard time nor will they allow a driver to go off on a FM.
They will fire a FM if the FM tells the driver to go ahead and drive anyway if the driver tells them they can not safely or legally make the run. I myself have told them I needed a appointment moved back and they will reschedule. I did it this last week and they could not reschedule, but told me to get there when I could. I ended up being 3 hours late, but nothing was said.

I had told the other poster that since he had no other trucking exp he had no other co to compare mav with. I guess he did not like that and said he knows when he is getting wizzed on. I told him if you think mav is so bad you should have started at a bad co then went to mav or left mav and then went to a bad co to know the differnce. I myself even left mav because I wanted to try a lease and had points against me. I had been on the waiting list for 6 months and when I was going to switch I had 3 points on me. So I left to try it somewhere else. I could not get back to mav quick enough. 30 days with that yanked up co and I was making a B line back to mav. The odd thing is when I quit my points dropped and when I came back there was no IC trucks available, but at this point I just wanted back with mav.

Before I left mav said it would be this fall before I could get in a IC and I did not want to start that late. I should have just stayed and waited till next spring. The point is one can think a co is ate up if they have nothing to compare it too. There are a lot of co's a lot worse than mav. For me tho I can't think of one better. Good luck and I wish you well!

That is a shame that companies cut the fat in ways like this. If they canned a driver like you, then I am scared to see who they kept. I wonder if they ever considered to lax up on recruiting and retain the drivers that make them the most money. If paying you your vacation is considered "too much" then it sure seems they are past the point of no return, in terms of a successful business.

One question, DID they really get 90% of their fleet home every weekend ?

Where did he say he was fired because he was going to get another week of vacation???? He said he was fired for maxing out points and still had 6 points after taking classes to drop points. 6 points is grounds for termination.

Don't know about Maverick as a company other than what I have heard but I do know a company that purchased 50 retired maverick trucks and within a year replaced 26 engines and more trannys. They seem to be pretty beat up when the trucks are retired. This doesn't agree to much with them taking care of their trucks and equipement. Although being fair turning a truck with 400K on it up to 75 and expecting the truck to run right probably isn't fair either.
I know a truck get's use to running at certain HP and speed you mess with it and things go wrong...

Thanks for pointing that out. I am unable to comprehend a "point's system" to termination system. A good driver is a good driver but dam they better be careful as to not accrue to many points. Childs Play

    I can only speak from my exp. so here are awnsers to your questions;
-home every weekend is taken very seriously, they no longer advertise 90% proably do to a lack of freight
-weather or not be close to a raise and vaca. played a part in the overall decision to terminate is something I'll never know
-It should have been long enuff that a class could be available to drop some points
-I could have easily lied (but I'm not that way- I always shot them straight) and not even gotten the final point tht put me at 6 for preventable overweight. All i had to do is say i didn't know, and its mav's job to worry about overweigh and truck maint. per the safety ladies info. As a matter of fact when i told her that i'd drove all night, spent hours unloading, waited all day for a load, spent hours reloading and by then it was the middle of the night, the shipper had u secure and tarp before weighing, and wasnt gonna wait in a line of trucks to unsecure/tarp and have 1 plate lifted, only to resecure and tarp again.... she said i have allot of respect for what u guys do, and u all me for anything u need.
-I had friends and respect at his company, a fleet manager that told me im one of a few guys he always kept up on after leaving my board (he's done this type work for over 10 yrs. and knows his stuff) and also told me when i left- he knows im not at the bottom of the list- meaning there are allot of cuts coming if their cutting me.
-The end result is that this is a business move imo; and a warining from me to current drivers to watch your points for small things, rookies don't run to hard and watch your points, and everyone keep straight cause it's only gonna get worse, id never seen cuts like this at the company. Or it refered to by drivers and office people i know as "I'd heard they were doing that."

I always put public safety first, after that my entire goal was to take care f them as they tak care of my family- get the load there when its supposed to be there- this is a business. I should have got more sleep, called and pushed things back, and whined more- therefore avoiding some of the points for small things that are given the same mark quality as big things.
    - This is a good company, as a matter of fact i waited to get on here and alway told peple i wasnt leving unless ti was to go o/o.
    - i never talked back to my fleet manager, matter of fact he said he knew my work ethic, and i was very professional and wanted me on his board in a yr. (pnts fall off) and would love to have me, that with my work ethic id make allot of money. Im not saying what board he moved to cover to avoid causing him any prob. shouldnt be hard to figure out.
-as far as cooking books- ive heard of them telling drivers, fix your papers and go get the load, i dont know personally because i always made time to get what they needed me to get.

I dont want to trun this into a trash talk on a good compay. I want to warn others it may concern of what appears to be going on currently at a good company, proably in the nameof a bad economy. Ive had more then six points over this 2 yrs. (see the list and do the math)- they can get points off you if your one of their good drivers- trust me. But if you ran a big comp. and had to make cuts but wanted to maint. being able to say in orientation "We've never had a layoff in 28 yrs." What would you do?
    - i agree with the "childs play" comment and many others made- hope all this helps someone else to avoid pooints that they normally would get off a good driver but in this environment and slow season coming- may use against you at their convience.
    - i never say i didnt earn my points or work in the same environment as others- just a heads up to all about how it works and when. I'd already been considering moving to landstar and o/o - ill be fine and so will my family. i've workd my ### off all my life, have a degre in law enf, and small elec repair. plus much much construction and other equipment exp, all gotten while keeping an excellent work history.- we'll be fine, others use this thread to your advantage if you can.

I was employed 3.5 yrs. Since they started using that point system you could not stay out of trouble. They brought up the fact i took off 3 months on FMLA to care for my wife after open heart surgery. Now we have no medical insurance for her meds or doctors appts. I had no points, and got a fuel bonus for fuel mile 6.994. 11% out of route. Never late always early never sick. They couldnt even get you home in time so i could get a dentist appt. The new COO isa heartless #######. This co use to be a grown up co but now its just a sissy company. One of the drivers let go had been there 16 yrs. They were just getting rid of drivers that were paid $.40/m+ and age and vacations time. They wanted my truck immediately for a new student graduating. They cant afford to buy new trucks so pulling seasoned drivers from their payroll and terminating them due to rate of pay and beneees. They throw an appreciation week so staff can eat and play football while drivers work their ##### off. Never have experienced a trucking co shut down as early as maverick. Loads not figured correctly to give you legal time to deliver or too much time to deliver. Your weekends get shorter all the time. Get home noon on Saturday and have to leave earlySunday to make their delivery times. Mondays use to have a 10 am delivery time. Not anymore. If you dont run on early schedule youll sit forever for load. CSR staff not educated in logistics. Dont sign onto this company unless you want to be ripped. this company can be added to the list of bad companies. You have to watch your check all the time to make sure they have paid you correctly too. The company is going down the tubes. Dont hire on. They use to pay layover pay and as of last week said they did not. They brought me into the NLR terminal due to the consignee taking the side rail off my trailer during delivery but that was my fault also. Maverick never takes responsibility for anything. Since they opened the school for new drivers the company has been going down quickly. Glad i dont work for maverick anymore. Something good will happen from their layoff for all of us x maverick slaves. I had no points when let go. I had had points but it had been 6 mo.and they dropped off
