    The Grey Ghost
Posted 43 Minutes Ago at 09.57 PM by overload63

I have recently retired from trucking because of an illness and have returned to school. One of my classes is composition and we have been given an assignment to write a story that is unique and different. Well, being a driver for 20 plus years and being AROUND trucks for more than 40 years. I have decided to tell stories of the road. Now the people I am wanting to hear from are those that know WHAT a twin stick is and how to use it. The ones that remember what it was like BEFORE A.C. and cruise control. The drivers that where drivers before deregulation and CB radios. The ones who drove on bias ply tires in the snow and had arms like a logger from turning that dang steering wheel. I am searching for stories and "Facts"? about the "Grey Ghost". Any and all stories will be read and considered. For my benefit PLEASE if you don't have a believable or better, a true story don't chime in. I know the legend for the most part but I am missing other stories to make MINE entertaining and maybe a chance to keep this story alive. I DO have my own story, but I would like to add yours (with your permission)
    Thank You for you time

i just learned of the "the gray ghost" last night while i was a passenger in a truck..i was overtired n thankfull i was notdriving. going down the road i seen this dark thing fly across the windshield...freaking out i asked the guy i was with if he had seen that. Thats when he explained to me about what it was...shortly after it happened again and thats when i decided that looking out the window the rest of the trip was not going to happen. I like the theory of it being a phantom of my ovetired mind then me being outright delutional lol...seriousely tho it was a very scary experience.

Not too many of those old boys left sir. Most of them were WWII Vets like my Grand Dad. He's 87 years old and still kickin. He retired from the Teamsters in 1986, and I do remeber a few good stories he told me about trucking in those days, 50's and 60's, if you're interested. I started driving not long after he retired so I'm a greenhorn.

Are you asking about the Aussie Grey Ghost K.W's that ran in the late 60's and 70's?

If you are then they were the fastest trucks in Australia in that era.The first batch of them were geared over 100 m.p.h. Fitted with 8v71 G.M's and 10 speed road rangers and apart from 6ton suped up V8 petrol Dodge paper trucks, there was nothing that could touch them. They were bogey drive 10 tonners with big pantecs on torsion bar suspensions, had a lot of body roll in the corners so much so the pans were built with steel plated wheel arches for the pans to come down on the tyres in the corners helping to keep the truck upright. They were called "Grey Ghosts" because they were painted gun barrel grey and were so fast it was generally "now you see them now you dont". I drove interstate in that era and they could really frighten you when they were coming toward you rocking and rolling from side to side. Had 3 of them chase me as i was climbing a hill called 'Bolivier"south of Tenterfield in New South Wales. I was half way up the hill in a F model Mack when in the rear view mirrors i saw their lights coming across the valley floor. The first one rounded me up then turned the lights out apart from his R/H indicator. As he pulled away in the darkness the other two rounded me up following his lead and dissapeared in no time. There is a site on flicker where you can see some good pics of them. They looked fast even when they were standing still.

I'd be willing to bet that the O.P. has already written his story, since his post is nearly 3 years old. Interesting stuff, however.
