to add on to my turning left in the inner left turn lane thread...what is the stupidest thing u have seen a rookie do?
mine is definitely once when i was workin the yard.....backed a 44,000 lb 53 foot trailer full of books into the dock.....set tractor brake, set trailer brake, put in neutral....unhook the glad hands release tractor brakes hold 5th wheel release button and pull out
what did i forget????????????
to lower the hydraulic 5th wheel
that trailer went BOOM and i went oh ####....lucky the landing gear held, no visible damage done
i just had to do it on a heavy loaded trailer...why not an empty?
stupidest thing u have done or seen a rookie do?

Well, I toss this one in...
Some years ago, I had stopped at the Wal-Mart on I-81, exit 273 in VA (when trucks were still allowed there). Load was about 40K, and the truck was riding a bit firmly, shall we say. So, I figured I'd slide the tandems a bit just to even things out (we frequently loaded at this shipper).
Well, just after I pulled the pins, another driver approaches and asks how this company is to work for. We chat, exchange pleasantries, and I leave.
Yup. Without finishing the slide job.
I get about a mile down the road when all of a sudden I say "darn!" (I'm paraphrasing here). I ease on the brakes, pull off on the next ramp, and finish the job. The tandems hadn't moved an inch, thank goodness.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -

I was loaded with 44k of copper coils on my first load ever, the engine light came on, dispatch directed me to the Volvo dealer. The techs told me to pull around the building, it had rained the night before and they had a dirt lot, as i pulled into the lot the truck sinked like an anchor. I some how I worked my way out after building some momentum rocking the truck back and forth. Got to rolling in reverse a couple feet I said what the he!! I could probaly make it out going forward. That wasn't a smart idea, once again I got stuck. The volvo dealer and techs were dying laughing. They called a tow truck out for ten minutes of work he charged $250.00. I paid it out of pocket in fear that my company would fire me.
