I was hired to move an empty 500 gallon fuel tank. I was told it would be empty, purged and certified. When I went to pick it up there was no purging done so no certification. However it is empty. Do I need haz mat? I run under 26,000 so I do not run with a CDL. It has placards for 1993 off road diesel. Can I cover the placards and go without any worries?

So there's still fumes inside? I don't haul hazmat, but I know fuel tankers still have to leave their placards up even when empty.
Anddddddd I'm just bumping your thread so a hazmat guy can see itG13Tomcat, slim shady and Slay Thank this. -
also a good source of info

Not purged and certified it is still a hazmat load and you must run placards and have a hazmat. At least as a CDL holder the under 26k and non-cdl may be an exception.

misterG, Dye Guardian, MACK E-6 and 6 others Thank this.

Thanks to all that replied. I refused to take the load and it was re-posted as a haz mat load. The broker agreed with me that shipper should have supplied the clean and purged certificate like they said they would do. The shipper said they would pony up a TONU.
I lost out on some money but I have no worries either.
Thanks to you all. -
