A truck driver was killed on Thursday in a catastrophic collision involving three semi trucks. It happened around 4 a.m. near the Lake Lawrence exit on I-20 in Newton County, Mississippi.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol stated that an initial crash led to a chain reaction pileup.

Trooper Andy West explained, “One vehicle hit the first, then the third hit the back of the second.”

WJTV reported that four people were involved in the crash. A UPS truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of one semi were hospitalized, and the third driver was not injured.

The collision caused extensive damage to the vehicles.

The accident blocked traffic on I-20 eastbound at exit 100. As of 8:30 a.m., one lane was reopened. By 10:15 a.m., MDOT reported that delays are to be expected for several more hours.

    The incident remains under investigation.

Can anybody say "following too close"?
Although I do find I have a tendency when using cruise control to let situations develop too long, as I feel a great resentment in having to dis-engage the cruise. Where as if I'm just using my foot, it's no big deal to just ease off the throttle and give myself some room.

No doubt the red Volvo was following to close or distracted and didn't brake in time. It doesn't look like UPS slowed at all. That's one torn to #### tractor.

The story comments said something about a car with no headlights and that's why the trucks were stopped on the road

There is no solution to tailgating.
Just go out there and hope you have enough space for you to break and survive a collision. If anybody behind you didn't leave enough distance, well then, he will die and it won't be your fault. That's the bottom line. You die if you are too close.

As badly destroyed as that cab was, at least he didn't suffer.

Everyone IS asleep at that hour. It's a awesome hour to be driving for some of us already inclined to do it. In the summertime its' really good not have to put up with heat at pre-dawn hours in the early morning.
