I was leaving a Fed Ex and my door swung open knocking a cheap mailbox off its post when I stopped at the guard shack. I didn't even notice and I thought the security guard was messing with me at first. This mailbox looked like it had been knocked off a hundred times before. A brisk wind could have taken out this dinky mailbox.
When he started to walk back to the guard shack saying he had to report it I started begging and pleading. It was one of those cheap plastic boxes you can buy at the hardware store for $9. I told them I'd buy them a new one but the only damage was the wood chipped under the two screws holding it down. I set the box back on the post and was about to run back to my truck to get my hammer and some improv nails when he says, "looks fixed, get out of hear." I thanked him up and down and drove out of there with my tail between my legs.
When I pre tripped the empty trailer I was taking out of there I just barely latched the door without throwing the handle back in the keeper. I didn't even mean to, was just careless and didn't fully latch it after peeking in to see if it needed sweeping.
I was so worried I was about to get a preventable on my record for .02 cents of wood under a $9 mail box. I'm glad the security guard was reasonable and let me go. I hate how some people want to start pulling out the paperwork when something so minor happens. I'd replace an entire fence out of pocket, right there on the spot before incident reports and phone calls and insurance all starts up.
Most embarrassing moment as a trucker.

I still don't know how I missed this, but I once drove over 40 miles at night with a loaded reefer and BOTH DOORS WIDE OPEN. I still scratch my head as to how the heck I managed to miss the fact that not only did I not latch the doors closed, I didn't even close them.

I know a guy that had a door fly open and caught one on those industrial downspouts on the side of a building coming off the gutters from the roof. I asked him how much it cost and if they reported it. He just shook his shoulders and said, "I don't know, I just kept on going." Sheesh. Making us all look bad.

I have two. One was with the last big company I worked for. I was so tired from the pace they had me at that one day pulling into a store parking lot to get something to eat I actually forgot I was pulling a trailer. By luck or God's grace I didn't hit anything. The other was a couple weeks ago near Junction Texas. I saw what I thought was a brand new sleeping bag laying on the shoulder. You know the kind with that shiny plastic cover it comes in at the store. I pulled over, ran at least a quarter mile back to it then saw it was the remains of a water bottle case.
