How far out of route can we travel on a designated permit route?
Picking up a 10ft wide load tomorrow morning going east. I'm routed along i80 near Chicago. I need to head up i55 towards 294 to pick up a stand/bridge I ordered for my ramps that was stolen a couple weeks back.
Pretty sure I know the answer.. I just need someone to confirm. And as such.. does anyone know a place along i80 where I can drop my trailer and not worry about my boxes getting robbed or the trailer getting impounded while I bobtale up to get my ramp stand?
Thanks.

From IDOT Website.....
ASSIGNED PERMITTED ROUTE: The assigned permit route includes a distance of one mile onto another contiguous state jurisdiction highway provided that no structures are crossed, no posted weight limits are exceeded, overdimensional moves are not obstructed, all other provisions of the permit are followed and the route is used for any of the following reasons: 1) To obtain fuel or repair. 2) To provide for food or rest for the driver. 3) To allow for a legal return to a permitted route after mistakenly going off the route. 4) To comply with regulatory signs to weigh.
I don't know anywhere to drop safely/secure around 294/55....Last edited: Feb 4, 2016

You can't go off route at all. I would have to read the IL rules some states will let you get off the interstate but most won't. Several states you have to get a local permit just to get fuel. Do yourself a favor and look up the local regs.
Well there you go. 1 mile.Hurst Thanks this. -
Most permits I have read said you go like maybe 1 mi for fuel, rest or parking purposes. Not much wiggle room. Was hoping some knew of a secret rule something I didnt know about.
Think I will drop my trialer at the scales there on 80 just south of chicago. Not sure where else to do it. I dont trust the rest area.

Rest area off of i80. About 5 miles away from i55.

You could get a annual, but I would ask the dealer about having the company that delivers their parts bring it to you. Lots of small courier company's in that area.

Local repair shop uses local taxis to pu and deliver parts.

I don't know what part of 294 your on but I think the 1st toll booth maybe the 2nd one, you can park there….just tell them you need to run and get a part for your truck..there is parking for about 10 trucks there….
Hurst Thanks this. -
But by going thru that tollbooth he would have to buy a toll road permit.$35.00 if just wide.
Hurst Thanks this.
