Crashed into a Denny's in Red Bluff earlier in the morning, then wound up killing a passenger in a roll-over near Mt Shasta -- yay bus safety...

Company had 2 inspections in the last 2 years, with 1 driver put out of service.

Bus companies have gone the same route as trucking companies. If the body is warm, put it behind the wheel.

Let me give you an example of the typical tour bus driver; A person retires after 25 or 30 years as a teacher, a plant worker or a police officer. Now this person says to himself, "think that I would like to drive and see the country". Goes down to a small bus company that might have 3 or 4 buses and is put with a "trainer" for a few days. The bus company takes this person down to the DMV for the CDL test, wonderful the CDL test is passed. That person is now put behind the wheel with some 53 people in his trust. Remember, this person came off a job that he kept regular hours, he went to bed at the same time every night, he got up at the same time every morning, he had his daily routine. But now he has taken a job which his whole lifestyle is not accustom to. This person now is reaching his "golden years" and it is like "jumping off a cliff" when he becomes a "professional driver"

I know what I am talking about, I spent over 20 some years in the bus business and I have seen the decline in the quality of drivers that are coming into this business, much like the quality of truck drivers. When you can't find work anywhere else, there is always "driving".

Before, I would step foot aboard a bus or allow a family member to do so, I would want to know the credentials of the driver. Do you even think that an airline would hire a "retiree", train him for a few days and put him piloting a plane??? That is what is going on in the bus business.

Tell you something else. The hours of service never changed for bus drivers, they are still under 10/15 rule. They can stop the clock. A bus driver can go to work @ 3am and work for the next 24 hours and never be in violation. I have gone in @ 3am, went and picked up the group, drove to the destination, toured all day, took the group out to eat that night, drove back home, got off @ 3am the next morning and NEVER VIOLATED!

I wonder if the company knew about the Denny's accident and if they did , why did he continue to drive.

Very easy to speculate here but could have been a lot worse , maybe head on with a school bus killing all aboard each bus.

Interested to hear some of the passengers side of the story.

I wonder if he had passengers when he hit the Denny's who then agreed to stay on the bus and give him another chance.

It is pretty clear that the human beings that drive motorcoaches under the old rules get fatigued completely differently than the truck drivers do under the new rules.
At least that is the conclusion of the FMCSA.
