    Right Lane Rule
Vehicles listed in VC 22406 must be driven in the designated lane or lanes when signs are posted.
When no signs posted, these vehicles must be driven in the right-hand traffic lane or as close as possible to the right edge or curb. On a divided highway with four or more traffic lanes in one directioin, these vehicles may also be driven in the lane just to the left of the right-hand lane. When overtaking or passing another vehicle going in the same direction, drivers of such vehicles must use either: (1) the designated lane, (2) the lane just to the left of the right-hand lane, or (3) the right-hand traffic lane when such use is permitted.

The law applies to 3 axles or more or any vehicle towing. Three lanes or less run right lane only, may use lane adjacent to right lane to pass slower vehicle in right lane. Four or more lanes may use right lane and lane adjacent to right lane to run in, not allowed any further left for any reason.

Yatista hit it right on the money. I see many trucks ride on the middle lane on a three lane highway(one direction) and stay there because they don't want to put up with the off and on ramp traffic merging into the highway(freeway) and that is not allowed. You can use it for passing only but you must return to the right lane ASAP. This applies in CALIFORNIA.

You would think it would be safer for a big truck to stay in that middle lane away from all the merge traffic. Yet another law that doesn't make good sense, only dollars.

Most urban areas with high merge volume post the middle lane of three as ok for trucks. Most metro areas are 4 lanes anyway allowing the truck to run in the lane adjacent to the right lane if they want

The thing I have noticed about California is the guy running in the truck hammer lane will usually move over to let you by and then return to the safer lane. Always a local California driver, they never do that any where else. Of course I came up on the guy that didn't move over. Thanks for all the info, it's appreciated.

Come to find out it is any road that has more then one lane. I was in the left lane going to make a left turn. Got over early so not to miss it and not to fight the cars either. Was about a mile before my left turn. State boy pulls me and gives me a ticket. Says I need to wait until I am closer to get over for my left turn. Street was not posted either so there you go. Just more ways California screws over a driver. If I could I would drive the bomb over to not it the rest of the way off the US.

I think that one might be an easy dismissal. Don't you love being on the hook because the state is broke?

I just got an out of lane ticket
on I-15 outside of Primm, NV. Just passing another truck. The fine in San Bernadino county is $227.00
The officer told me i should go to one of those places to argue the ticket and have it reduced to a non moving violation. He said he never has a problem telling the judge it is ok.
