Actually they dug out the approach a couple years ago on that one, now it's 14'0" and no more trucks hitting it. Although right after they did it there was a combine that thought could make it under it and the top of it didn't fair to well!

Ah, ok,, I was in that area in a 4 wheeler fairly recently and *thought* it looked different.

I know in the 2013 RM Atlas, it shows 183 as a truck route and it used to be listed in the front as an 11'8 clearance. So yeah, just goes to show that an orange highlight doesn't necessarily mean don't duck!

Fwiw, my 2014 Atlas shows US129 in Tennessee to the NC line as still an STAA route and we all know it's not....

They did fix it in the 2015 edition, I think. They fixed some in IL that I know of. Better late than never.

And to my knowledge, not one of them is on a STAA-designated route.

US 11 is not a STAA-designated route in Alabama. Here is Alabama's list:

Rand McNally's MCRA highlighted routes are roads which RM believes are legal for vehicles with STAA-dimensions, but not all of them are officially designated as STAA routes. And some of them are wrong (in 2012, I got an overlength ticket from Manhattan, IL -- a road RM had highlighted until their 2015 atlas).

In addition to the length and width, STAA routes also have to meet other restrictions like:

    • The route is a geometrically typical component of the Federal-Aid Primary System, serving to link principal cities and densely developed portions of the States.
    • The route is a high volume route utilized extensively by large vehicles for interstate commerce.
    • The route does not have any restrictions precluding use by conventional combination vehicles.
    • The route has adequate geometrics to support safe operations, considering sight distance, severity and length of grades, pavement width, horizontal curvature, shoulder width, bridge clearances and load limits, traffic volumes and vehicle mix, and intersection geometry.
    • The route consists of lanes designed to be a width of 12 feet or more or is otherwise consistent with highway safety.
    • The route does not have any unusual characteristics causing current or anticipated safety problems.

im on 52 all the time in that area. What were you driving when you got the ticket? 53 ft trl? Tanker? I'm kinda curious how an over length is possible.

    Just a typical Cascadia & 53' van...

Class I & II routes allow unlimited overall length, 13.6" height, 102" width, and trailers up to 53' long. Otherwise you're limited to 65' in length (a standard OTR sleeper rig + 53' trailer is closer to 75').

Much of US 52 is a class II route, but not the section running through Manhattan:
