I drove big trucks coast to coast 30 years ago. Now I want to go back to it. I just got my class A CDL permit from Connecticut. I dont have any 'recent' experience. I dont have access to a truck to take the driving test. I picked a school at random, CR England. They told me of course that CR England doesnt operate a school in Connecticut. I got the permit because a heavy hauler friend was going to let me run with him. That plan seems to have stalled at the moment. I was under the impression that the GIANT trucking companies train you, get you your CDL and then put you to work but from what Ive seen so far, I think Im wrong about that. WTF, over?

They put you through school and you have the option to work for them to pay off the schooling or work for someone else and pay them the $5000 or whatever the price is

Check Celadon and Swift. Both have good training.
Celadon even provides free room and 3 meals a day.
Both provide transportation to get to the school.
Edit: Lots of changes since you last drove. For example, if the school/company wants you to bring your birth certificate or social security card, they mean original, not photocopy. If you show up with photocopies, you will be sent home.
Ensure your blood pressure and sugar levels are good. Medications for these are OK as long as the medications bring the levels to normal.
Work history: account for the last 10 years and even any gaps must be accounted for. If you can't remember them all, the social security office can give you copies of jobs where you paid into social security.
Companies these days run background checks, so if you leave anything out, they will find out and send you home. Most companies even overlook a felony record as long as you were honest about it on the job application.Last edited: Nov 13, 2014

Since you drove before find the cheapest driver mill you can find to get your cdl. Maybe even look into refresher courses. These outfits are terrible for newbies to start out with because all they teach you is enough to pass the CDL test. Having driven before thats all you need.

Try Klan they have a cdl training program you look at.and stay away from swift

My driver license is as clean as the driven snow. But Ive had a few BS fender benders that have spiked my car insurance rate. Can insurance lepers get hired or is this all just a big waste of time? The insurance companies really do have the final say on who does and doesnt get hired. They cant tell the company not to hire you, theyll just say 'if you hire him we're gonna drop you'
Chinatown Thanks this. -
