Two federal safety agencies, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), plan to issue a joint proposal in March requiring automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems on heavy-duty trucks, as called for in the 2021 infrastructure law.
The proposal will include performance standards, motor carrier maintenance requirements, and test procedures for measuring AEB performance in NHTSA compliance testing. American Trucking Associations and Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association have offered support/opposition, respectively.
A 2022 NHTSA study found that vehicles with AEB and forward-collision warning technologies cut crash frequency in half. Many new commercial vehicles already have AEB technology, which is now standard on new passenger vehicles and was agreed to be made standard by 2022 by the U.S.’s top 20 automakers.
