Allow me to break this CDL "written test down" for you new drivers.
First of all you need a valid state DL class D. At the DMV you tell them you would like to take the tests for the CDL IP, or Instruction Permit.
These are taken on a computer and are multiple guess. They consist of General Knowledge(usually 50 questions), Air Brakes(25 questions) and Combination Vehicles(20 questions).
There are usually a few questions on Hazmat in the General Knowledge portion but those answers are covered in the General Knowledge study material. Unless you are required to have(or desire) a Hazmat Endorsment, don't study the Hazmat section until you are done with the rest and have all your required endorsments. Unless you are a real brainiac, concentrate on learrning to Drive.
Take the General Knowledge first as many answers in this section will be addressed again in air brake and combination, but in different wording.
If you are testing and hit a question you are drawing a blank on, SKIP that ?!!!! In many cases it will be answered later in the test for you!
Any endorsment tests you need or desire can be tested for any time after you have your IP, or CDL A.
DON'T add Endorsments onto your IP as you don't need them until you have your CDL. You can take tests any time and add all the extra crap at one setting. Otherwise, you'll be paying for a new plastic card every time you add a endorsment.
ENDORSMENTS are Doubles and Triples, Hazmat, Tanker, Passenger and School Bus
FYI ( although I have seen and heard many companies ask), There is no Air Brake Endorsment!
Cost will vary from state to state. I am in Wi, which is costly in MHO but here was my costs.
Took all 3 tests for IP and issued plastic......$30
Issued CDL A upon completion of Skills test......$69 ( this is prorated based on the time left on your DL when turned in)
At that time, i had tested for doubles, tankers and Haz......$0
In Wi, there is NO cost to test, only when Endorsments are added on the plastic, which constitutes a RE-ISSUE
I added School Bus and Passenger at a later date......$10(total)
The grossly exagerated cost of the Hazmat endorsment is for finger printing and background check.
Not to take the test.
Cost to take skills test.... Pre-trip, Backing and driving.....$85
Good Luck to all!

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being best) where would you rate your overall experience with Central?
-
The types of brakes
How to check each brake
What spring brakes are
When to use the trolley valve
how long it takes to build up air pressure
When the spring brakes come on when the air pressure reaches x amount.
Study each section very closely. In my state the first tries on each one are free except hazmat and endorsements.

You will also have this restriction if you take the road test on a vehicle without air brakes.
