Aspiring reefer OO a few questions

    • What are the insurance requirements for hazmat loads as OO?
    • If dealing with brokers do they use transflo or do you take a pic of the signed bol and email that to them?
    • Do brokers look at how many years you've had your Mc to judge if your new and if so is this why many choose to work under other more established authorities with history on the beginning?

Insurance for hazmat is 5mil liability I believe.

Brokers will need signed BOL’s. Very few require you to physically mail them in. For the rest, how you decide to get the bols in are up to you. Some companies prefer transflo. I personally make pdf files with an app, build my invoices in QuickBooks, and attach the paperwork to the invoice in the QuickBooks app, and email to the account department of the customer (usually listed on the rate sheet or carrier setup)

Your active mc is an indication of your reliability. The first noticeable increments of age are 3 months, 6 months, 1 year. Then after 1 year is just bonus to your perceived image. After about 1 year, almost all brokerages are open to doing business with you.

I don’t have hazmat myself, but used to be 2 levels, depending on commodity hauled. 3 mil, or 5 mil. Insurance coverage requirements.

Thank you, so how do you built credit or reputation if your just starting with a newbie fresh Mc? Aside from direct DC accounts, you find the bottom of the barrel brokers?

That, or you just do what you can to come out swinging. Be confident in your service / ability, be professional, I think having a basic website early on helped me, and just take a mental note what brokerages have what policies for active authority requirements. There will be many brokerages that will use you asap that aren’t tql, coyote, ch Robinson and Landstar. I have actually not hauled a load for anyone of those companies. Jb hunt wants 6 months, I think prime wanted a year, R&R wanted a year, but most that have requirements are at 3 months.

see here’s the thing, I wouldn’t suggest your authority age by asking “do you accept 1 month authority or etc”. Just call, ask your good questions, book the load and that’s it. If there’s a problem with age, or company policy they’ll let you know.., or sometimes make an exception depending on urgency of load and etc. then once your in, your in with that company.

Insurance for hazmat is 1 million liability with a 4 million excess everywhere I go also requires a 1 million gl too so make sure you request the excess to cover the gl policy and the pollution too it’s not automatic

Is there a link to all distribution centers in US to try to obtain direct contacts?
