First, thanks for this forum and the guys who help out. It is really useful to a new guy trying to get a handle on this crazy biz.
I've spent the last few days reading the forum and I've found some threads that come close to answering some questions I have, but they are either from a few years back or aren't specific enough to my situation.
So, sorry for a new thread asking stuff that's already been covered, but do you have any specific advice on how I would go about things?
My situation:
I've been bouncing around the idea of getting my CDL and driving a truck for years, and now I'm ready to pull the trigger. I will do something by the end of May this year.
- Early 50s, good health, single, no family responsibilities.
- Little debt, not much savings, good credit.
- No job history since 2001. I have started and sold 2 businesses, and am a freelance writer now.
- I don't drink or do illegal drugs
- Clean criminal & driving record
The question is, what do I do to get started?
If I had my choice I'd like to get a CDL on my own and then choose who I want to drive for. I don't have enough cash to pay for a school outright, so I would need to find one that offered financing.
If I couldn't do that I would be okay with signing up with a company with training, but with no verifiable job history I don't know if any companies would be interested in taking a chance on me.
Knowing my situation, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have a job history to me. What am I not understanding. In order to maintain as much independence as possible, I'd suggest you decide what kind of driving you'd like to do first. Some folks have been burned by getting their CDL from a school of their choice only to find a good company and learn that they don't qualify because that company has their own list of approved schools. Be careful where you shop.
Aamcotrans, Selva and tscottme Thank this. -
well if you are technically "unemployed" check with your states unemployment services. They have a grants that will pay for schooling. Plus you might qualify for the pell grant. If you want to take your time. I'd go through the Tech College course vs your "As seen on TV" School. Also check with the carriers you are thinking of trying to go with. As they'll have both accepted and preferred schools.
@Chinatown is a fountain of useful info on companies. But you'll need to let us know where you live. Also what you're wanting to do, Reefer, Dry Van, Tankers, Skate Boards....etc.TravR1, Selva, Dixiegypsy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Job history will be a problem for many companies unless you have tax records to back up when you did work.
Check you state for free cdl school. As @FLtoOKBound posted the state has Pell Grant program.
States have WIOA program which you can Google for information on your state.
Another person that had been unemployed for years was accepted for a trucking company cdl school, until he admitted smoking pot years and years ago, so that ended that job interview.meechyaboy and Selva Thank this. -
Thanks for the replies.
I have a Missouri DL, but I am staying near Nashville right now. My goal is to get back west.
I have friends in the oil & gas industry and they have told me about what's going on in fracking, so that would be my first choice, going somewhere I could work in the oil fields.
If that's not an option then I will be fine driving a dry van, reefer, or tanker.
I'm not in a big hurry for anything except to get started. Once I'm getting experience I figure I'll get a better idea on what's next.austinmike Thanks this. -
