Wyoming needs to shut the roads down before the accidents begin. Then they need to get
deicer such as salt or calcium chloride or some other deicer before opening again.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
The weather in WY is such that it would be impossible to keep them de-iced all winter long. Its icy like that ALOT of the winter in WY... A salt shaker can go by and in less than 30 mins its like he was never there at all. Too much snow, wind, and cold temps to keep up with it. I have on occasion seen conditions such that the tracks from the semi 1 mile in front of me were completely drifted in before I come along.
Icy roads in that part of the country are part of daily life. The difference when these big wrecks happen is that the visibility is very poor, and drivers dont slow down to match road and visibility conditions.
Most drivers out on the road these days are fools... And if you watch videos of these big pileups you will be able to see what I mean. In every video I have ever watched of any major pileup in the winter, maybe 2 or 3 trucks are going reasonable speeds and are able to stop and avoid getting involved... Until some other idiot plows into the back of them. -

Just to add to what Cattleman 84 said WY DOT do what they can do to keep road safe. With wind 60 mph sand or salt ends down on the median or shoulder and never stay over ice.
You can't beat the NATURE. But you can be smart enough not to be beaten.allniter, Bud A., FerrissWheel and 8 others Thank this. -
Everyone is always screaming at how stupid bull haulers are... The one in the video above only bumped into the truck in front of him. Given the conditions I'd say he did a pretty fine job of getting her shut down. But no one else seemed to be able to.
Yeah it was a pretty hard bump, but he was paying attention and was able to SHUT IT DOWN!!! Most of the others didnt even appear to be trying to stop... Cause guess what, they were going WAY to fast to begin with. And then they probably just stood on the brakes!!!! You cant just stand on the brakes on ice people!!!!!!!
What happens when you stand on the brakes on ice??? Your tires brake traction!!! I dont care if you have ABS or not you still loose traction, and at those speeds you cant regain it quick enough to matter or make a difference. Once this happens you will actually ACCELERATE while you are standing on the brakes.
Yeah I know what im talking about it, I've experienced it first hand. I learned to drive a Semi very young on the farm... I thought I was Bobby Big Rigger, Chuck Norris, Super Trucker, Cool Hand Luke, and Ten Foot Tall & Bullet Proof. And it nearly cost me my life before I was even a teenager...
And I lost control going to fast downhill under a load of hay. Thank goodness it was on the farm and not the open road... And I had a long straight stretch to just let it slide, while I cried hysterically. It was 2 years before my Dad could even get me inside of a big truck, let alone drive one. As I got older, I did "play" on the ice and in the snow with big trucks. I scared myself a few times. But not like that first time.
Yeah its himan nature to push the limits and make mistakes, I've done it... I just told you that. The difference is I was 10 YEARS OLD!! The grown men and women shown in the video above should know better. SMDFH
Sorry... Rant over.allniter, Big_D409, Gearjammin' Penguin and 18 others Thank this.
