This thread is great. I am looking forward to having a trainer as i endured a slightly different experience myself.
The first guy i drove for introduced me to driving like this
"That load has to be in Holland Monday, the paperwork is inside the fridge cover, your on the 10.30 pm Irish ferries out of Dublin. Call me when you get to Dover and dont F$%#$# wreck my truck"
Luckily i met up with another guy on the boat who was going near my drop in Holland so ran down through England and across to Holland with him, he even waited for me in Calais to get off the boat. The load was all Dell computer parts so pretty light but expensive. Needless to say i don't think that would happen here and quite rightly so.

Hi all, yes befor eyou ask I am a trainer for a med. size company. Sounds like you all have your share of bad time stories. Ye sI have mine also. But I think maybe we should be helping these new guys and gals as much as we can. i read one post here I think the first one and I'm not picking on anyone in paticular but I have always trained my students from the passenger seat. I get them behing that wheel as quick as I can and get them to drive as much as possible. I would never sleep in the back with a student unless I felt REALLY comfortable with their driving. They will only learn by doing. My job as I tell them is the following.. The school you graduated from did just what they neeeded to get you to pass and get your CDL. nothing more. That's how those schools make money, by turning over students as quick as they can. My job now is to tweek your abilities or fine tune you so you can performe the job you were hired to do and to get you moving on your own and make more money then you will by being in my truck. You need to learn the ways of living on the road, making money on the road, getting along with everyone on the road ie.other truckers,shippers,recievers, and yes even dispatchers. But above all that get home safely to your love ones! remember Be Safe Be Good Be Gone

Well guys, understand your frustrations...but if your a trainer, that is the life we lead...driver(potential or not) that cant do many ofthe basic things to do this job safely and on time. I myself have had many of the same experiences and refuse to train anyone as a team style until im am confident they can be trusted. at least a week or 2, maybe more of 1 on 1 my butt in the passenger seat if he/she in the driver seat. This aint no joyride....this could be life or death. I always start with the basics from day 1. I take their licence and dot info and copy it down before truck even moves. Then I drive at least 1st day talking, chatting and asking questions while student gets comfortable with their surroundings. If all goes well, 2nd day Il start them driving after a "thourough pretrip and paperwork test" I ant to know what they know, or dont know. I can usually spend time up to 300 plus points on the pretrip, seeing what they know and if they get ####y, theres always more to show them to bring that ####iness out. Its always the same, teach them to shift, drive, pay attention, so forth. I know they may have been to school, but as far as im concerned, they know nothing of real world trucking yet and I let them know that and that my main concern is that they will know what they nneed to do this job safely when they leave me and have the ability to continue learning when they do. After ive taught them what I can, their Final test is to be able to get all info from QC, pick it up and deliver it on the right routes, scaled, ect without my help as me as the passenger and watching. No Offense to some of you, but it is my belief that you shouldnt train unless you have at least 5 years experience, without it, you cant be able to effective in training with various OTR experience. I use to be a trainer for Werner...long ago...and all my students fell in love with me..cause I was so nice and engaged....they all loved me...
I had every type of person imaginable..from a large German lady who invited me to their nudist beach...to a black guy who passed gas way to many times to a large Texan...who wieghed like 450 pounds...but they all loved me...cause I was very profesional and safe... -
hi all well i got a very good trainer. my 28 days turned into 56 days. i had to wait two weeks in oklahoma city for a my trainer and then we here out for my 28 days but the truck broke down 5 times and we were down for eight days that i had to makeup and my lead driver had to go on his home time. so i went home and waited for him. he had his home time and then it took him a week to get a load to come pick me up and then i was out for 10 days and then came home, and had to wait for a truck of my own, but i got one and my husband came with me, we have on the road for 3 weeks now. we have been having load after load, we don't even get none with one load and they are ready with the next. we broke down today so i have a little time to rest and sent a quick note, to say hi to all. well bye for now. christine

Hey trainers - what are your thoughts on trainers who are unsafe, drinking with students, and so on? Really over-the-top behavior. Do you think they should be turned in, or what? Just curious, since everyone I'm reading here seems to be a really professional type who wants the best for their students, company, and industry in terms of turning out people who drive safely....but I'm sure you've heard tales that would make your hair curl.
This sounds like an obvious questions, but you know how it goes--a student wants to get through their training and not start over waiting for a truck and trainer and has to make the decision to tell their student driver manager that something is seriously amiss. Not talking about nit-picky stuff or a whining student that was born unhappy.
(I'm not looking to turn this into a bad story thread, just curious about how things are viewed from the other side of the fence)
