I have been there and if memory serves me right there is 2 plants there across the road from one another. The one on the right side was on strike for a long time. We used to haul out of the one from across the street, and I think the last time I was there they was going under. I know they had a sister plant that they closed to keep that one open, but think both ended up closing down. We used to haul some kind of lumber out of there. I think the sister site was in VA. I think it was Emporia, or Franklin VA or Suffolk

Redcoat made his delivery on time this morning. He waited for about a half hour to see if he would get a load from the same place but nothing came over the QC so he went ahead and put all his tarps and chains away. Another 2 1/2 hours later he finally got a dispatch to go to Severs (?) in Columbus, MS to pick up a 46K coil and take it to Winder, GA. This time it took him 2 hours to chain and tarp so he knocked a half hour off his time and it was a bigger coil.
I have a question. Why does he have to tarp this coil if there are bunches of them sitting outside in the yard waiting to be loaded? Obviously it's not for weather purposes or else the others would be under some kind of protection and it kind of makes no sense to try hide such an obvious load.
RC is not going to make it as far as he had hoped he would this evening. He wanted to try to make it to the Pilot at Exit 5 in Georgia but he's not going to have enough hours after sitting for 3 hours waiting for a dispatch and then taking 2 hours to tarp. Looks like it'll be the I-20 Truck Stop for him tonight with longer to go in the a.m. Not exactly what he wanted.
Other from that, so far so good. The Challenger Thanks this. -

Ah, the old tarping a load that was sitting outside routine. Driver should ask the shipper if the load needs to be tarped and find out straight from the horses mouth. A lot of times, dispatch says tarp the load rather than ask sales if it needs to be tarped. They figure, when in doubt, tarp it. Also it usually says on the paperwork wheather to tarp or not. Actually, he could call the consignee and find out also. I've delivered many a tarped load and the consignee unloaded it and stored it outside.
One more thing, brokers will sell their services to shippers and throw in tarping for free to try to get the business. So, when the broker dispatches the load, it comes over as 'must be tarped', when in reality, it doesn't need to be. But since the guys at the shipper aren't doing the tarping, they couldn't care less if the driver is tarping a load needlessly. Plus, believe it or not, I've met drivers that tarp all loads, wheather or not necessary.sarge26044 Thanks this. -

Yeah, like that load of copper that we picked up last summer, from Toelle, UT, going to Amarillo, TX. The broker told us it HAD to be tarped. Just flat plates of copper, that have unbelievably sharp edges.
Shipper didn't care, beautiful day, we got out of there, took it to Amarillo, and none of the other 100 trucks in the plant that day were tarped either.
But then again, we didn't work for Maverick either, and we have all heard, it is the Maverick way, all the way. -
Why didn't Mr. Redcoat apply to the specialized division out of Laurinburg, NC? Running the glass and whatever else out of there, he could have called NC home, rather than Mississippi. Just a thought. I just looked at there website, and it did say they train for that too. I have never hauled glass, so I have no idea how different it is from pulling a flatbed, but they same basic principles would apply to both I am sure.
