Joel Morrow likes the Air Dog on his Mack. Don't know it the Detroit would respond the same, may be worth a shot.
Early response to the Fleet air filter were positive. Some people have had sensor issues from oil contamination, that seems to be caused from putting too much oil on the filter.

That's good info on the too much oil on the filter.

Yea he's doing over 11 mpg iirc. People in his group say whomever specced and ordered these trucks did an excellent job. They all say 10 mpg is very doable. I just wanted to get a idea what the bang for the buck might be when adding the filter and airdog. I only intend to do this for about 18 months more, maybe 2 yrs, to retirement. So long term beyond that is not part of the picture in cost/value returns.

    Thanks for your response.

Just drive it and be happy. Chasing MPG just takes the fun out of everything.

I don't do it for fun. Besides, beating the norm IS FUN!

I'm here for the money. More mpg is more for me.

More mpg does not mean more money in pocket in long term. If you want to have more money in your pocket you must do calculation. Include truck payments, repair, towing bills, downtime in money,.... imagine you will have this truck next 5-6years. Do research to find out how much costs dd12 equipped trucks clutch replacement, dd12 failure rate and repair costs,...

If you're looking to average 10 mpg month to month you're gonna have to tippy toe the throttle and take advantage of the terrain and elements.

From experience, I know it's possible, but you have to be aware of your gauges at all times, which are your indicators, and gentle on the go peddle.

Speed is a variable that you control and is important when you're looking for fuel mileage.
Don't be the driver that isn't willing to slow down 5 mph in a heavy wind.
I've seen savings of 25 gallons over 800 miles in heavy wind and a full load when compared to the 3 other trucks I was running with when we left home.
They gained a little over an hour on me, but I saved 25 gallons of fuel and got unloaded 8 hours before them because I made no assumption the receiver wouldn't unload until morning.
(you never know if you don't ask)

One of the people I drove for in the late 90's bought a brand new 97 W900L with a flat top bunk, Series 60 @ 425 HP, 3:70 rears, 24.5 rubber and a Super 13 speed.
For aero effects it had bunk extenders and a vari shield deflector.
Truck had a little over 30,000 miles on it when I saw it for the first time.

We had a fuel mileage war going between us and the first time I drove the truck we were running double and he accused me of cheating, said I stopped while he was sleeping and put $50 worth of fuel in the truck.

I managed 8.26 MPG over a distance of 450 miles the very first time I drove the truck, I was the fuel mileage king for more than a year, until he hooked to a really light load with all the time in the world to get there and he managed 10.25 MPG over a distance of 1500 miles.

Can be done, just takes patience, a gentle right foot and paying attention to the physical world and understanding it, particularly the wind.
I've had experiences where the wind was such that I had to pick up 5 mph in order to up the fuel mileage, rare but it happens.
Your gauges are your best friends.

If you run from Denver to KC, for example, across the plains you'll know that it's downhill from west to east and often times the wind is from a westerly direction, fuel mileage will be better than going the other way, uphill and against the wind.
Drive west and south at night and east and north during the daytime.

Just use logic, reason and have an understanding of physics in the real world. never let your brain get in a hurry.
Tune out everyone else, forget what the other kids say, focus on your task and, don't care if you get passed by who or what.

My 9.25 4800 mile week, (I was training someone for that week) was all light footed. I run western 10, dry van. Talking with someone else about easy throttling got me that week.

Now I'm really paying attention to it. I only go over 60 if I need to make time for an appointment. My acceleration rate is much lighter as well.

Yesterday's head winds from Cheyenne to Douglas cost me, but I still got 8.8 with the light load.

Today will look ugly because of more above idle time charging batteries because the roads suck. But that comes with the territory.

    Thanks for the tips.

Any thoughts on the AD and filter? Mpg values?

    I have some thoughts.

Not up on all the new gizmos, had to do some reading, watched the video and everything.

I have my druthers, being these are performance add ons.
I can see gains at wide open throttle, but you're not driving a 700 hp truck with your foot on the floor all the time or competing at tractor pulls.

Your fuel system shouldn't have any air in it if it's working right.

As for the fancy air filter, I would be concerned about it's filtration ability and how much dust it might not filter.
The more air you get the less restriction there is, so theoretically more dust.

To overcome restriction without increasing dust intake you need a big filter with big plumbing, or two filters for adequate air intake and filtration.

I've had to replace a brand new air filter with 800 miles on it after driving through a dust storm and had another plug up with snow all the way to the turbo.

Personally, if I were looking for gains in fuel mileage or a few extra hp I would probably look at K&N first, just because they're established and respected when it come to filtration.

Otherwise, I would likely go with off the shelf filters, but do some research to find the least restrictive with the best filtration or a happy medium.

I can see issues that might arise with the foam filters drying up or moving around and shredding or grating the inside filter on the metal cage and the foam particles going through the engine.
Not a for sure, but a maybe.

If there's any way to reroute, reduce restriction, or increase flow in the intake plumbing I would also look at that.

Here's a video that might give insight on the plumbing.
Carbureted gas engine, but shows how important the path of the air is to the volume of air.

I'm of the mind, keep your filters clean, the engine in tune, the tires at optimum pressure, easy on the throttle and you'll get the most out of it.

The Fleet filter is basically a K&N
