Worst time so far this century if that tells you anything. However, in 6 months it could be one of the best times.

Own authority or not depends on how much knowledge you have and how much you want to work. Does he have your full support back home to help book loads, do accounting, paperwork, permits, deal with regulations, etc? Are you an organized person? You guys could make more money for sure, but it takes a team in the long term or he probably should just lease on somewhere. Much less headache but less potential and less say over what your doing.

Trucks are already cheap, but will get even cheaper. Wait 6 months, get a killer deal on a low miles truck, and try it at that point.

Edit: by hotshot do you mean box van, sprinter, or something like that? If so, no I would never do that.

This is a absolute worst time to get into anything right now. Wait until the dying by the thousands are reduced to zero every 24 hours. We teeter on martial law or some other really bad situation. Indeed Washington DC and surrounding counties is a armed fortress and a formal declared title 10 battlefield with troops deployed there on missions of all kinds.

Businesses standing today will not be a month or three from now. You would have nothing.

Finally but not last. Transportation is suffering essentially total losses across the board. All forms in the USA including shipping and railroading etc. Its really bad timing. And worse. Particularly as we go through almost 5000 dead every 24 hours for a while.

Maybe its a awesome time to open a funeral home. Just remember the dead are infectious hazmat as well.

 

The next couple months might just be the best time in decades to get a great deal on a used truck and trailer, but the worst time in decades to start a new business. Most owner operators are sitting right now because there is no freight to haul at a fair price. If he can afford the equipment and sit on it for a while until the market gets rolling again, that might be the best course of action. Nobody really knows what it going to happen for the rest of this year, so it's all just speculation.

 

Hold off for now untill things get back to normal.

 

Emphasis on spectulation.

Auto retail and used has absolutely stopped. You can get a caddy for 2000 dollars if you wait long enough. Be cheaper for the dealer then going out of business to dump inventory than get stuck paying taxes on a mountain of rotting used cars no one wont buy. Or have the money to buy.

The last time this happened around 2007 our big large car dealers in Sherwood became vacant grass growing lots in a year. Closed. Gone, Dusty. That took a couple years to come back.

And so around the full cycle we go again, only worse because we are for the first time in 100 years are in a NO &^%$ Pandemic. We have made decisions with money that are absolutely unreal 3 months ago. And frankly if everyone made the decisions we made if they have any money at all....

And it's gone. The pitiful 1200 from unclesam is literally ...

And its gone. And not even hit my bank or ex's bank yet. Thats all gone on paper. Worthless.

And a business? Oh no. I would see a ELE, a extinction level event if you did not already park that truck and wait a while on unemployment until it recovers.

And thats the problem. America as we knew it three months ago is finished. Forever.

Things have changed. The problem is we don't know yet how much it has changed until next year a least.

Thats why I take the position I take. Stay home take care of your family and build up money if at all. Be ready to take advantage of happy days when the sun comes up figure of speech and it will. But just not yet.
