Big, I've really enjoyed reading your posts about Stevens. I'm planning on applying to Stevens after Roadmaster here in my home state, FL. You have any insight on Stevens current hiring of drivers from CDL schools other than their own. I was told by a Stevens recruiter that if you are from FL then you must go to an affilliate school. I am working with a Roadmaster recruiter in the process. Thx.

In texas beleive it or not they do a pre trip on paper. Its a written test lol. They dont physically walk around the truck. That and ur skills test u only have to do a straight line back and a parrellel. Thats it. Easier than ohio lol. Yea study for now, pre trip, general knowledge, air breaks, and combination vehicles. Stevens wants u to get hazmat but when u get back to ur home state. And by the way, if u have a clean background ur elegable to run to canada. So u have to get a passport too, they have the card were u can travel by land and see but not by air. This is 45dollars and stevens reinberses u.

Well, I've only been to NYC once and I have refused to drive in LA in my car for years, so I can't do an honest comparison. My best advice is pay attention and go slowly. AFAIK if you have your cdl you still go through the same training program, unless you have experience. They do have some dedicated routes, but they won't even consider you for one of those until you have a year and a reputation for getting your loads there on time. Home time is one day off for each one week out, they encourage you to be out at least 3 weeks before going home.

For those of you coming to Stevens from out of state, all you need to do is google the Texas Dept of Public Safety, then look on their site for CDL license. The entire book is on .pdf on their site. That way you can study Chapter 14 before you get here so you'll be ready. Chapter 14 is the only test you have to pass to get your CDL permit, but you have to pass the others prior to the final skills (driving) test. But honestly, as I've posted before on this thread, when I took the test I felt like it was more general in nature than just Chapter 14. Chapter 14 is titled Special Requirements, but the test I took had a lot of stuff from other chapters in the book. I think they actually want and expect you to have read the entire book before you get your permit. That is what I did, I looked over the whole thing before I took the Chapter 14 exam. But as I said, it's all online so you can get going on it now if you want.

Depends. On your skill level, how many miles you have under your belt, what company you worked for, and how recently you've driven. The driving skills test they are speaking of is the skills test to get your CDL. No, they won't make you get another CDL. And, it's doubtful they would make you go all the way through CDL training again. But they may want to road test you. From what I understand, if you have a year or less they will road test you and the instructor riding with you will decide if he thinks you are ready to put you OTR alone or he thinks you need a trainer with you for awhile. If he's really not satisfied with your skills, I suppose they may require you to do some driver training to get up to speed. If you have lots of miles and they're recent and more than one year of experience, you'll probably just go to the 3 day orientation and either out on your own or out with a trainer for awhile.

Best thing to do is call a recruiter and give them your work history. They will then give it to safety and you'll probably have a good idea from there.
