i've seen a few trailers that are made like an enclosed but will open on the side to allow loading from the side. seems to me this would be a great answer. You could haul stuff that required a van or you could haul flatbed loads without the headache or tarping. can anyone give me the good, bad and ugly on this train of thought?

Just as long as he don't buy a RGN -
just found out the they are called curtain side trailers. Wouldn't this type of trailer give you more options as an O/O ?
-
Yea it would until some asshatt forklift driver bumps the rail and you can't crank the curtin closed -
Regardless, just hope that analyst dude is right! -
Here's the thing... it's all theory.
What's good about trucking is that once you're set up, you're good to go compared to a lot of other business ventures. If you put $20k into a restaurant, what if no one shows up? If you buy lawn equipment and a trailer, who's going to tell you what lawn to mow next? You have to build up your customers. Same with a retail store and so on and so on.
With trucking and an established broker, you can generate as much gross dollars the first week as you're basically ever going to with a single truck operation.
You're not going to get your own contracts, so you're not going to wait 30-60-90 days to get paid; that's a myth.
So assuming you end up in the same shoes as the rest of us, you're going to have some set up where a mother company of some sort has a way to pay you within a week or so and can provide basic expense advances here and there.
So when someone asks "what do I need to have on me for startup money?", that question only applies to the first month out. EVENTUALLY, some repair or series of upsets will occur that you will be literally starting over 3 or 4 times that first year unless you have a lot of money to start with.
I don't know any other O/O's that aren't going through something similar. We all end up eventually taking that truck out there with NOTHING but the promise of some receivables down the road. Heck even that would be a dream, heading out with nothing. Again I'm going out with nothing AND several thousand in bills due 2 weeks ago.
Trucking inevitably leaves you living settlement to settlement. So how much do you need? More is better, but nothing is also possible. It's all up to your comfort level.
The only other thing to say is that you will have disproportionate repair bills that first month if you buy a truck that has been sitting for a while, so you would do yourself a real disservice not having at least a couple thousand standing by.
