    Hi

    I was born in Minnesota but have been living in Australia since about 7 years old for the past 28 years. I am a dual citizen and have a US birth certificate, social security number etc.

    My Mum moved back to the US a number of years ago and once all the current drama with the virus passes I was thinking of making the move back myself and pursuing trucking as potential career option. I do not have experience over here with trucks (actually been running truck stops for the past decade.)

    A couple questions I had which I'd love some feedback on are the following;

    - Upon moving back I would obviously get a localised driving license for MN or wherever I end up. To go for a CDL do I need to hold a normal license for a certain period of time? if yes, what is the time? And I'm guessing my Australian license would not count?

    - I can get paperwork here before I come over in terms of a police check, driving record etc. Are there any other records that would likely be needed?

    - Would the fact I am coming from another country impede my ability to find work in general, mainly regarding the initial employment with a mega carrier as that seems to be the standard way in to get experience. I'm assuming after time served moving employers wouldn't be too much of an issue so long as clean record etc.

    Thanks ahead of time for all replies, sincerely appreciated

    BB

    If you have legal paperwork as you mentioned just get here , obtain your CDL through school or without , find employer and start working . I believe you shouldn't have regular dl for certain period to obtain CDL. No one cares and be able to check your out of usa records regards your employment here . Australian license might count i think for 90 days and only for regular car ... Not sure what category is that

    ... isn't it in Australia or new Zealand that you have trucks look more like trains with 5-10 trailers at a time ?!

    Minnesota might be a good choice of state to transfer your license to. They are not as strict and demanding as some other states.

    And if you are a US citizen already you should have no problem.

    Which state will you live in when you get here?
    Some private cdl schools at community colleges or technical schools are very cheap.
    Anywhere between $1500 to $4000 for many of them.

    Have all your employment info for the past 10 years ready. That was about the only the thing I needed from the UK after I moved back to the USA after living overseas for 13 years. I already had my CDL before I left the USA so I can't help on that front.

    I did the same; lived in China, but kept my cdl current.
    I don't think he'll have any problems if he attends a private cdl school.
    Find a school, then ask questions there at the school.
