My first commercial driving job was with CF. I probably wouldn’t want to peddle freight in a cab over with no power steering or AC now, but in my early 20’s it was a great job. The really good days I got to use a road tractor still in service that the AC wasn’t disconnected.![]()

I always liked their original colors.

I can't see how a person can call themselves a professional driver without knowing at least how Freightliner was founded.
One of the first trucks I drove was a cab-over White Freightliner without power steering. Man those were the days. Paying cash for fuel and lumpers would do a whole trailer for $40 bucks. -
Check out post # 1609. This info just popped up in the last year.

Here is the bottom of the page. Notice the engine. That has got to be a very early example of a super charged HB Cummins since most didnt come out till after WW2.

I believe we've discussed the origins of the Frightliner [sic] cabover. It was a joint venture, I believe, between White and CF in 1951. I read, 1958 was the 1st tilt cab Freightliner. CF trucks were just Freightliners, then became White Freightliner, then back to just Freightliner in the 70's.And yes, I have driven them, begrudgingly, but it was a truck the boss told me to drive, and I did what they said. I knew a guy that drove for CF in the 70's. He drove a truck like the doubles one, it had a 250 Cummins, 7 speed, an air pressure gauge and buzzer, a water temp. gauge, a warning light for oil pressure, and a speedograph. In the wind, he said he rarely got it into 7th.
booley, DougA, Landincoldfire and 1 other person Thank this. -
And if you blew the air horn, you lost 5 mph, lol.
