Hmmm... yeah I’m eligible but I liked the connivence of ifta tracking and like you said ease of logs...

I do see keep trucking has a special promotion for VDO users, I got the email today. Free hardware hook up, and 6 months free service. I just really didn’t like handing my phone over to law enforcement but... evolve and adapt huh?

I wouldn't put it on my phone regardless (for multiple reasons.) First - my phone's main purpose is to be a telephone (remember those, lol.) Second, the more apps that you have running on your phone, the more LIKELY that your phone will experience technical "burps" like losing bluetooth connection, like rebooting and freezing, burning excessive battery and getting hot, etc. Third, what you said - I'm not keen on handing my phone to anyone, including LE. I would spend the $10 per month more down at Verizon to get a Samsung Tab A for my navigation and Elog only.

I initially hated the idea of putting KT on my phone, but I hated the idea of hauling around another device even more.

It's not too bad on the phone although I will admit it eats battery

**disclaimer I hate ELDs no matter how they work

They should just give us the software to put on our office computer and we could continue to use the hardware.
No reason to have and maintain a portal on server somewhere when the law says log records are to be maintained at your home office.

This. Is what I was telling my wife! The software is already developed, just sell it to us if they needed too.

maybe it has something to do with satellite renting or usage? I don’t know if they have to keep paying the satellite owners to keep active gps positioning on the units or not. But I do remember reading, that gps actually goes off cell towers I think and not satellite. Even then, maybe there’s a cell tower charge that they don’t want to keep paying?

Mine is a solo unit and has no cell conductivity at all.
My logs are transferred to my office computer and then the portal via a memory stick.
As far as the positioning , it uses the standard satellites like any other gps device.
If we just had the software to put on an office computer I would be fine.

That’s what I’m saying. I’d be fine too. But there must be some reason they won’t. I’ve been using a solo VDO unit too, for 2 years now. It seems like whoever owns those satellites will charge a fee to the companies that use it. Unless it a public satellite everybody gets to use? I’m sure it’s not cheap on production and to get it up in orbit. I don’t know...

more maybe it’s a liability thing? They don’t want to get sued for their program not accurately recording logs or something.

I too want this software. I’d really rather not switch to another company. I paid like $500 for my unit and it works great

As far as I know all the gps satellites are free to use as a requirement because they were government funded with federal tax payer dollars.
VDO had a sizable following in Europe for their ELDs long before they came in to the American market.
I wonder if they pulled the plug there also ?

Well that and all a GPS satellite does is beam down a signal that tells the (very precise) time and location of the satellite. It's not a 2-way communication.

Now the GPS unit may talk to another satellite, or cellular to get location data like "3 miles from Flint, MI" But that's done with some sort of internet service from the GPS unit sending the coordinates it received from the GPS to another service, likely ran by someone like Navteq. They probably don't want to pay Navteq any more and without that data, it's not a legal ELD.
