I see a lot of references to trucker etiquette but I have yet to see the rules written down anywhere. My dad started teaching me how to drive when I was 7 sitting on his lap. He was a traveling salesman and drove at night. This was in the 50"s & 60's. He taught me a few things that I've used since then.

    1. When being passed by a truck turn your lights off and on if at night the opposite in daylight, to indicate when to safely pull in.

    2. When passing a truck and the driver indicates with his lights it's safe to pull in tap your brakes twice to say thank you.

    3. Because of the auto brake feature on newer trucks do not pull in after passing until signalled it's safe so as not to trigger the #^&%$# brake system in the truck you passed.

I dont know if this next is a formal bit of etiquette but I've noticed it occurring quite often.

    4. When passing on a multi lane highway do not pull in until signaled by the truck's headlights.

    5. When meeting oncoming traffic at night dim your lights a minimum of 1/4 mile away. Don't be a douche if someone flicks their lights at you. It's not personal, your lights appear bright to them and they're checking to see if you could turn them down.

    6. Move over when you see a truck on the shoulder if possible. If not slow down to 45. (Or whatever your state requires.)

If you have more please copy and paste the list on to your post and add to it, don't just hit the copy button.

It is sad that this is ettiqute. Mor like common sense. Dont need nobody to signal me over, ill get over when im good and ready. I hate it when guys cut in front of me with 6 ft to spare so i dont do it to them. But some guys will flick their lights as soon as u clear their bumper

I don't know if flashing someone over is safe anymore.

Had a driver who was cruising along with some yahoo passing him, he slowed a little and when the driver was one trailer length flashed the lights - can turn them off. So the idiot gets over and then slams on the brakes so not to miss his exit which he was passing.

Yes my driver hit him, and thanks to a dash cam, the clown got a ticket for it.

As Tibbit said a lot of guys will get over as soon as they can and act like they don't do anything wrong.

What really irritates me is when someone passes me on a virtually empty highway.
No one in the rear view for nearly a mile, and they still cut me off.
Both cars and trucks do it.
What is the mentality of it?

I assume that they think that their speeding is less obvious when they aren't in the left lane for some reason. Who knows but it is really irritating.

Forget what your dad taught you. I have mirrors and I'm not afraid to use them. I can see you and I know where my trailer ends. The most important lesson is, mind your own business. The only time to flash a driver is when they absolutely have to change lanes immediately for safety and they need to know you're not going to hit them.
