Back in the old days, Radio Shack had some really good CB Radio models. They had Turkeys too, but they had several popular models that lots of Ops liked..

I'm jumping on the GMRS band wagon. Look for me on 7.

I'm tired of the static on CB, tired of spending $500 on just the equipment to only get 3 to 7 miles on perfect SWR (literally, no needle movement on external meter), don't have time or money to deal with analyzer, etc. I'm using a barefoot radio and no tech has ever touched it. I'm tired of having to worry about who should I trust to open it up and tune it. I'm tired of the beeps, echo, annoying "wild west" tone, etc., etc.

Can I please just get a radio that gets 10 to 15 miles of range going down the open highway right out of the box? No tuning, no worrying about antenna theory, no extra gear to buy.

Russ, is GMRS the answer? If it is, alone as I might be at first, I'll be getting one and getting the bumper sticker. Change is good.

That said, Craig and all the other CB Original Gangsters on this forum, thank you for all you've done to help me in the past with my CB setup. I know now more than I ever would have without you guys. Problem is, I just want a radio that works (works = ~10 miles range) without a lot of fuss. It seems to me, CB means a lot of of fuss to get to acceptable ranges. I'll be running both CB and GMRS for now.

I'm one of those idiots that just keys the mike, so this is likely a stupid question, but could a manufacturer put both in one case, so that if CB comm was a mess people could switch to GMRS like they do to SSB? (I know that's not the same, but for many users it is just using a switch to use a different kind of radio)

I'm guessing that one issue would be needing two different antennas...

Yes, this could be done but I don't know of any radios that do that.

It'd be cool to have a radio that transmitted on both bands simultaneously!

It's not a "Stupid" question.. But, unfortunately the FCC will not allow a Licensed Service to be mixed with an Unlicensed Service in one radio.. And, you will need two different antennas, one for 27 MHz and one for 462 MHz / 467 MHz...

To be clear, when I said it could be done, I meant the actual doing of the thing is possible. But what's possible and what's allowed are two separate things. LOL

So Russ, in your opinion, is GMRS the out of the box radio that I'm hoping it is? (See my post above.)
