How to find parts for a old engine

My guess is that pretty well after the BSX ACCERT nobody wanted a CAT anymore and threw them away.
My 3406e has all parts available with many being on the shelf.
That powers a 96 KW and I have no problem getting parts for it either.

 

The older engines in trucks are found in almost anything that requires an engine, whether that be farm equipment, construction or mining that are still in use.

So parts will be available for a quite a while yet.

Newer stuff are more integrated in the machine they come in making it harder to switch to another machine.

 

I knew were 2 v12 hall-scotts was located. In pieces. I'm not family and had no say in it. They were scraped with everything else in the old boys shop.

I priced out a head for my 3406 build. Parts guy could only find a handful and they were overseas. I'm going to rebuild mine. Even with my discount on parts it would save me about $2k to have my old head rebuilt.

 

CAT still builds C15's and C13's. They're much more advanced than the truck engines though.

 

Engine parts can be found at the dealer. Sometimes, parts are discontinued, but usuallythey are for the truck it self. Then you need to look a a truck junk yard.

 

That’s impressive. What makes them more advanced than the truck engines?

 

Well they have all the emissions junk on them now lol. I think they're all running MEUI C injectors too.

CAT had supposedly come out with their next gen turbos too. I don't know if they are used on the 15/13 or just on their smaller engines. Rather than running twins, they use a single turbo but with 2 different sized turbine wheels in one housing IIRC. Front 3 cylinders feed one, rear 3 feed the other. Small wheel gives quick spool up, larger one makes the big boost when pulling hard. Pretty neat concept.

 

I’ve got a Mack e9 v-8 that parts are a little scarce on. You can’t still get parts, but they are pricy. Volvo pretty much doesn’t support them anymore.

 

Would you happen to know what the turbo with the 2 turbine wheels are called?

I tried finding info on it.

Sounds like a neat setup, but how does “much more advanced and junk” go together?
