1st off the rental is not necessarily going to be cheaper than buying a truck. There are pros & cons to both. Use the search bar to properly educate yourself on them.

2nd. An O\O can run a day cab no problem. Many do & do it successfully. These guys typically have contracted freight. I would be very leery of running a day cab while moving broker freight. The reason being that load & unload times can keep you from getting home.

    3. be ready to spend on hotel rooms. If you get caught out past your hos. you will need a hotel.

    4. day cabs have the same rules & regs as sleepers. I don’t know why @Bigwin123 thought they were different.

Probably because many day cab drivers are within 150 radius miles and wouldn't necessarily need to worry about being time managed:dontknow:

Then in terms of getting paid would be it classified as a 1099 contractor?

You don’t need MC #’s to haul exempt goods.

some guys will do this while they wait the two weeks for their mc #’s to go active. I did.

you would still be your own business & have your own US DOT number.

Now that i’m done rambling, your answer... sure.

you could be invoicing & getting a check, you could be paid via 1099. Depends on the agreement between you & who you do work with.

I personally have some customers who issue all contractors a 1099. I have some customers that could care less. I am just another bill to them.

When I lived in Virginia. I thought about doing the same thing. This was back in 2009. I talked with every one. I was gonna sub out to the recycling side of waste management. I don't recall everything he said. But it pretty much boiled down to. If I wasn't near my house. Or a family members house. Or yadada. A tent behind the seat wouldn't cut it. But it was years ago.
