So...since then I’ve started practicing backing. It’s always...blah. I usually drive nights. My teammate helps and doesn’t help. Sometimes he only spots me using one mirror (right convex). But I narrowed it down to that I struggle with my straight line and not everything. I practice an hour a day (digitally). It should not count and most truckers would agree. But the video game let me see mistakes I make constantly. “So this is why everyone keeps saying it’s a truck not a car. Well, that’s on them for not disqualifying people from getting their CDLs once they see they have a registered Prius in their possession...” But it’s going better. I’m still embarrassing. But I sing about my feelings when I’m not paying attention. Truck driving was always going to be embarrassing for me.
So I have my CDL but am a functionally incompetent trucker. Now what?

I would avoid doing digital. When your at home. See if some one has a pickup with a 26 foot 5th wheel you can train on. You would be surprised as to how similar that 26 foot and pickup are to the tractor trailer.

Too add more complications for you, when you do get out and look, see exactly where the white lines lead to. I have been at some places you could not trust. Some required your trailer tires be touching the line, some you needed to be 4 to 5 inches inside the line. When I delivered to the Post Office, the margin of error was so slight you couldn't imagine. Why they had metal ramps that almost touched each side of the trailer I will never know. You could be off by a few inches and have to relocate.

Try this, when you have a lot of room. Get the Truck/Trailer, and wheel straight. Then start backing it up, let go of the wheel. It will stay straight on its Own. Point being, it won’t do anything unless you make it. Helps give a sense of control. Try it, it works. Stays straight in line, no hands.

Still learning... everyday is a different place, a different situation and experience... and one day I may back like a pro and surprise myself... and another day I just can't get it right...They Call Me Miss Frizzle Thanks this. -
