look at the many times, freight is slow, and how many times you very well may be sitting at home, or at a truck stop. could be days, even a week, before you get rolling and earning your money.

sure that state job with the DOT may be boring enough that you claim you dislike it, but you'd be working thru all the slow times when others are sitting. your vacation time and vacation pay will continue to add up. your retirement will continue to add up.

wanderlust was in all of us, and some out there, it's still in them.

look at it yet another way, weather conditions many times force you to shut down. as a plow driver, you're working, earning double time and lots of OT for all your hours, to make bank with.

look at all the accidents during the bad weather, those guys should have stayed off the road. you might be called in to clean up, again, lots of OT.

not too many truckers (company drivers) will have the same pension, health plan, that you will have. and if i am correct, you can retire in 25 years, at the age of 58, get a full pension, and THEN go on the road.

you really have it pretty darned good right now, where you're at.

I like running coast to coast; many of us do.
That helped me decide where to re-locate for better year round weather, no state income taxes, no food taxes at the grocery store, low property taxes, palm trees swaying in the breeze.

Yeah, it seems like a driver shortage for a very specific type of driver lol. I can't blame the trucking companies though. They're just doing what their insurance companies dictate. Quite frankly, between the weak interest from trucking companies and some of the feedback on this thread, I'm feeling pretty gun shy about leaving my job lol.

Thanks for the info, by the way. I sent in a 3rd party driver application the other day, and it looks like CRST and Roehl might be interested in taking me on. However, CRST requires new drivers to team for at least 6 months.

I have a state pension coming my way when I retire.. Maybe if pensions survive.

But the way its looking right now my personal endeavors will far outweigh anything the state is going to give me

I'm amazed at how well Microsoft has protected their interests in cloud services, operating systems, VoIP communication technology and gaming over the years. They're challenging a lot of major competitors on different fronts.

Also, investing in noSQL databases is another really great choice in hindsight. If I had your knowledge, I might just quit my job and start investing/trading haha.

This is also my issue as well currently working a unionized job for the last 18 years close to 50 years old now. Yes, the pension is good and all the benefits and redundant monotonous boring route runs but at this age having Managers who are younger corporate pretentious morons thinking they are 'King' always trying to write you up for not being in proper uniform, a minute later on the time clock or stuck in traffic (that you can not control) on your way to a customer etc.. it takes a toll on your pysche!!.. One of the reasons I even joined this forum is to obtain feedback from those driving OTR. And even though many say 'Don't Do it'..yet they still remember in it even though a good majority preach on how bad it is. Ironically, in my younger days (mid 20's I did it..back in the early 2000..the only major issues were the truck stop layovers @ $50/day during slow times, only a Randy McNally map book without city inner city surrounding industry area maps & highway patrol always giving truckers a hard time because they had massive mood swings which depending on you obtaining a ticket or not! Now there are Trucker GPSs for low bridge Clearances, no more paper logs so the company can't push you on those tired days as much etc...Note: Did not mean to railothe thread just thought I'd mentioned my thoughts on Otr and get more feedback towards going back to it or not or possibly becoming a Owner Operator.

My hiring "tier" penalizes us for drawing from retirement before we're 63 (which isn't too far away from 58). Also, we have to put in 30 years. I would be 60 after 30 years of duty, which would leave 3 years of limbo between time served and being eligible to draw from my pension.

What concerns me about returning to trucking most is how easy it was to get fired the first time. At the DOT, you'd really have to give it your best effort if you want to get fired. Between that and the other points you mentioned, I might have to hit the pause button for a while.

Exactly, you get to sample just what this country has to offer on a state by state basis. I really miss that! I may have to live vicariously through you, @Chinatown lol.

Theres nothing special about me. It sounds like you have good foundational knowledge just reading that. Thats really all you need. You dont need to be a wizard.

Spend about a half an hour a day just reading market news and such. After a year, youll be in a good spot.

I also have a subscription with the Motley Fool. I took their investing strategies to heart and a recommendation from them goes a long way for me.

Their free resources should be more than enough for you to at least get started. There are some other perks in there as well. But, their free articles are still great.
