Yes, as absurd as it sounds...they, legistlatures, are proposing a new law that would out law truckers from using cell phones while driving...I heard it today and last night on the news...(this law is specifically aimed at truck drivers or commercial drivers..)
Once again...under pressure by some lobbying group.
This time I think they've gone to far...
1. Trucking is a business...truckers use their phones to book loads or to recieve last minute updates or changes from broker or dispatcher...
2. When your away for weeks...the phone is a drivers life line to his/her family...to expect a driver to not talk or connect with his family or recieve calls on cell phone is or would be unbareable for many...
3. Drivers often have to use cell phone to get updated directions while on the go...there are many places a driver simply cannot just pull over to make the call...
Bottom line...this would be a very intrusive unpractical law for proffesional drivers..
And i wish these people, these groups, concerned whatever, would quit intruding in on our lives...
What's next...will they band CB radio use?![]()
Cell phone use to be outlawed, if new law passes...

Feds weigh cell phone ban for bus, truck drivers
By JOAN LOWY (AP) - 5 hours ago
The rest of the articlerookietrucker Thanks this. -
Outlaw cell phone use in a vehicle period, if your going to do anything at all...I mean what sense does it make to target buses and trucks?
I think it will be hard for OIDA or anyone to argue that drivers should be allowed to talk on a cell phone, especially while provinces and at least NY have banned it in any vehicle...but I do not know how they can say some vehicles can and others can't....
Jeepers, we will be lost if we can't talk throughout the day! -
I believe this one is already on IL's books. I'm not sure if it covers hands free, but I know it covers talking on the phone and driving.

In the article they put Buses & Trucks in the same Sentence! This Is WRONG Bus drivers do not really need to use cell phones like Truckers do! There should be a differance!!!

Truckers are no different them the rest of the populace. We become JUST as if not MORE distracted when driving and talking. How many times have you passed a trucker weaving in and out of lanes and you swear this guy must be drunk then as you pass him he's gabbing away on the phone.
Driving an 80K bullet while talking on the phone is not a necessity. Sorry. I do not believe it should be outlawed (nor do I think helmets, seatbelts, and so forth should be required). I am a firm believer that the gov should not be telling us what to and not to do, but in this case, you put not only yourself but every other innocent person on the road at risk.
You are no more important then the sales guy, the ceo, the banker, or the mom with 5 kids with complex schedules. Pull over, then make your calls.Big Don Thanks this. -
Yerp. Send it to congress please... I'll be doing the same. We can't expect to make our points on here and be heard.. It just doesn't happen. We're pissing in the wind like this. I don't like it, the Goobermint doesn't need any more control over us than they already have, next they will outlaw CB radios because they are "distracting" .. Not buying it. I've been driving safely on the phone for years, I might not do it in the bigger cities where my attention is more demanded, but out on an open stretch of highway with nothing better to do I don't see why it would be a problem. Your car according to the constitution is an extention of your home, even moreso to truckers because we do actually live in our trucks.. The day the government bardges into my home and tells me what i can and cannot do will be the day i leave this country.. and by the way things are looking, that days almost here.Last edited: Sep 24, 2009

The NY law allows use of hands-free devices like headsets and Bluetooth...
When I worked at Bradco, we had guys driving flatbeds come in all the time with the Bluetooth setups....While they can be annoying to others, I cxan see how they'd be a boon to a driver, if he has one, ands a phone with voice dial.... -
Province isn't that a Canadian term?

Got news for you. I sent a letter to my congressman about a bill in GA that would actually make handheld devices illegal in vehicles. It would actually make talking on the CB illegal even though it was targeting cell phone use and trying to make them use handsfree devices. Under the wording of the law, talking on radios would be banned for everyone except emergency personnel.
Not sure of the outcome of that bill.
